What Is Google Labs (labs.google)?

Google Labs is Google's public home for AI experiments — a place where you can browse early-stage tools, try some of them directly, and join waitlists for others. It's aimed at people who want to see and test what Google is building with AI before those products become mainstream. The site organizes experiments across creation, development, exploration, and learning, and states that the work is done with responsible AI in mind.

What you'll find on the site

The homepage presents experiments as individual cards, each with a short description and a call to action. The calls to action fall into two types:

  • Try It Now — the experiment is open for you to use.
  • Learn More or Join Waitlist — the experiment is described but not yet broadly available.

Some experiments are grouped under a "Be the first to experiment" section, which highlights newer or more experimental projects.

Examples of current experiments

The listing below reflects what the site currently shows. Availability can change, so treat "Try It Now" as the signal that something is open when you visit.

Experiment What it does Access shown
Dreambeans Daily personalized collections of stories on topics that matter to you Try It Now
Google Flow Music Create full songs with an AI music studio Try it now
Google Flow An AI creative studio for bringing stories to life Try it now
Pomelli Build scalable, on-brand marketing content Try It Now
CC An experimental group agent for families and households to help manage home logistics Try It Now
Play with Putty Collaborative "vibe coding" that lets teams build tools and websites together in real time Join Waitlist
Stitch Turns natural language into high-fidelity UI on an AI design canvas Try It Now
Mixboard An AI concepting board to explore, expand, and refine ideas Try It Now
Opal Build, edit, and share AI mini-apps using natural language Try It Now
Stax An AI evaluation toolkit for testing models and prompts Try It Now
Jules An asynchronous coding agent for tasks like bug fixes, tests, and features Try It Now
Learn Your Way Transforms content into a tailored learning experience Try It Now
Vantage Develops skills like collaboration and critical thinking via GenAI-simulated teamwork Learn More
AI Edge Eloquent Turns raw speech into polished written text Learn More

There are also research-oriented entries such as Literature Insights (finding papers and generating reports or slide decks), Hypothesis Generation (a multi-agent tool that simulates the scientific method), and Computational Discovery (an agentic engine that generates and scores code variations).

How to use it

  1. Go to labs.google and scan the experiment cards.
  2. Read the one-line description to judge whether the tool fits your task.
  3. Click Try It Now to open the experiment, or Learn More / Join Waitlist if it isn't open yet.
  4. Use the top-level categories — All, Create, Develop, Explore, Learn — to filter by what you want to do rather than browsing everything.

A practical note: because these are experiments, features and availability can shift between visits. If a tool you saw is no longer listed or has moved to a waitlist, that's expected behavior for this kind of site, not a broken link.

Who it's for

  • Creators — Flow, Flow Music, Stitch, and Mixboard cover video, music, UI design, and idea development.
  • Developers — Jules, Opal, Stax, and Play with Putty target coding, mini-app building, evaluation, and collaborative building.
  • Researchers — Literature Insights, Hypothesis Generation, and Computational Discovery support literature review and hypothesis work.
  • Learners and households — Learn Your Way, Vantage, and CC apply AI to learning and home logistics.

If your goal is to see what Google is prototyping with AI and get hands-on with the ones that are open, labs.google is the entry point. If you need a stable, supported product with guarantees, these experiments are not that — they're early-stage by design.
