What Is Ren'Py and What Is renpy.org?
Ren'Py is a free, open-source visual novel engine for telling interactive stories with words, images, and sound. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and in browsers via HTML5/Web Assembly (beta). renpy.org is its official home: the place to download the engine, read the documentation, follow the quickstart, and find community support. It suits both beginners writing a first visual novel and developers building more complex simulation games, because the script language is approachable while Python scripting is available when you need it.
What you can build with it
Ren'Py is used for visual novels and life simulation games. According to the site, thousands of creators use it, and more than 8,000 visual novels, games, and other works have been made with it. You can browse examples on the Visual Novel Database, Itch.io, and Steam.
The engine is designed around two layers of control:
- A script language for dialogue, branching, and scene flow — intended to be easy enough that anyone can write large visual novels efficiently.
- Python scripting for logic-heavy systems, which the site describes as enough for complex simulation games.
Where it runs
| Platform | Supported |
|---|---|
| Windows | 10+ |
| macOS | OS X 10.10+ |
| Linux | x86_64 / Arm |
| Android | 5.0+ |
| iOS | 11+ |
| Web | HTML5 / Web Assembly (Beta) |
If you plan to ship on mobile or in a browser, check those targets early, since the web build is still labeled beta.
How to get it and start
The latest official release listed on the site is Ren'Py 8.5.3 "We Can Go to the Moon", released May 15, 2026. Ren'Py 8 is recommended for all projects. There is also a nightly fix build, which contains fixes to the latest stable version; it is less tested than the official release but often includes fixes that haven't gone through the full release process.
To begin:
- Download Ren'Py 8.5.3 from renpy.org (or the nightly fix build if you need a recent fix).
- Follow the quickstart, which walks you through creating a simple game.
- Use the reference manual when you need details — it is comprehensive but complex, and is also available in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
Licensing and cost
Ren'Py is open source and free for commercial use. That means you can sell a game made with it without paying a license fee. The site does not describe paid tiers or account requirements, so treat the engine itself as free to download and use; any costs would come from your own distribution choices, not the engine.
Who maintains it
Ren'Py is not owned by a single commercial company. It is supported by sponsors, listed on the site as Heavenshire Stories, Toto, Icjerk Studios, Yvela, Blue Factory Games, Pete Goodwin, MANITU Games, Anonymous, and 354 more. There is a "Become a Sponsor!" option if you want to contribute financially.

When Ren'Py is a good fit
Choose Ren'Py if you want a mature, free engine aimed at dialogue-driven and branching narrative games, with a path to add Python logic later. It is less obviously suited to genres that don't center on text and scenes, such as action or 3D games, where a general-purpose engine would likely serve you better. If your project is a visual novel or a text-heavy simulation, the combination of an easy script language, broad platform support, and an active community makes it a practical starting point.
