Why Is Webcam Toy Not Working or Not Accessing My Camera?
Webcam Toy needs two things before it can show your camera feed: JavaScript enabled in your browser, and explicit camera permission for the site. If either is missing, the page loads but the camera never starts. The site's own error messages point to four common causes — JavaScript disabled, camera access blocked, another app already using the camera, or an unsupported browser. Work through them in that order.
Check JavaScript first
Webcam Toy displays "Please enable JavaScript to use Webcam Toy" when scripting is off. The whole effect picker, countdown, and capture flow depend on JavaScript, so nothing will work until it's on.
- In Chrome or Edge, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript and make sure sites are allowed to use JavaScript.
- If you use an extension that blocks scripts (ad blockers, script managers), allow webcamtoy.com there too.
- Reload the page after changing the setting.
Expected result: the "Press the button to access your camera" prompt appears instead of the JavaScript warning.
Allow camera access for the site
If you see "Please allow access!" or "Please allow access from the menu above," the browser is blocking the camera for this site.
- Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar.
- Set Camera to "Allow" for webcamtoy.com.
- Reload the page and press the camera button again.
If you previously clicked "Block," the browser remembers that choice, so you have to change it manually in site settings rather than just reloading. On a managed or work device, camera access may be disabled by policy and you won't be able to override it.
Close other apps and tabs using the camera
The site explicitly asks you to "close all other websites and programs that may be using your camera (Skype, chat etc.)". A camera can usually only be captured by one application at a time, so a background video call, another browser tab, or a desktop chat client will silently hold it.
- Quit video-calling and chat apps rather than just minimizing them.
- Close other tabs that might be using the camera.
- Then reload Webcam Toy and try again.
Expected result: the live preview appears and the effect thumbnails (Normal, Alien, Black & White, and the rest of the 80+ effects) become usable.
Use a supported browser
Webcam Toy states it does not work in some browsers and recommends Chrome or Edge. If you're on an unsupported browser, you'll see "Sorry, Webcam Toy does not work in this web browser." Switching to a current version of Chrome or Edge is the fix — there's no in-page workaround.

What happens once it works
After access is granted, you can take a single photo or four photos, apply any of the 80+ effects, and use Mirror, Square, Countdown, Flash, and Full Screen controls. Photos are not stored online unless you choose to share them — you can save to your computer, or post to Twitter, Google Photos, or Tumblr, each of which requires signing in to that service.
