What is Newman UMass (Newman Catholic Center)?

Updated

Newman UMass is the Newman Catholic Center serving the UMass community, describing itself as a "home away from home" and noting it has existed "Since 1963." It combines Catholic worship (Mass and Adoration) with everyday student space: study rooms, a library, pool and board games, outdoor seating, and a cafe on the first floor. It is open to students and visitors, and you can reach it at 413-549-0300 or [email protected].

What the center offers

The center serves two purposes at once — a place for religious practice and a place to spend time between classes.

  • Religious services: Mass and Adoration are part of the regular schedule.
  • Newman Cafe: Located on the first floor. Students can swipe meal cards, and breakfast is available all day.
  • Study spaces: Quiet rooms set aside for studying.
  • Recreation: Pool, chess, and checkers tables.
  • Library: A place to sit and read.
  • Outdoor seating: A patio area to eat or sit outside.

Who it is for

The center is built around the UMass community — students in particular — but the welcome message is general: "We're glad that you are here!" and staff say they are ready to assist with questions. If you are a student looking for a place to study, eat, or practice your faith between classes, this is the intended audience. Visitors are also addressed directly by the contact invitation.

How to get in touch

The center's own message is to call or email if you can't find what you're looking for or have other questions — that is the fastest route for anything not covered by the posted hours and amenities.
