What Amenities and Study Spaces Does Newman UMass Offer?

Updated

Newman UMass (the Newman Catholic Center) offers four main amenity categories beyond its religious services: study spaces, a research center, recreation areas, and outdoor seating, plus an on-site cafe. These are open to visitors during building hours, which run Sunday–Thursday 8:00 am–10:30 pm during the academic year (5:00 pm otherwise), and Friday–Saturday 8:00 am–5:00 pm. If you're looking for a quiet place to study, a spot to relax between classes, or somewhere to eat on campus, here's what's available.

Study Spaces

The center provides dedicated quiet study rooms, making it a practical option if you need focused work time away from busier campus locations. There is also a library where you can sit and read.

Research Center

A research center is listed among the amenities, giving students a designated area for academic work beyond the standard study rooms.

Recreation

If you want a break rather than quiet study, the center has:

  • Pool tables
  • Chess tables
  • Checkers tables

These are set up at tables in the building, so you can bring a friend or two and play.

Outdoor Seating

A patio with outdoor seating lets you eat or read outside, including sunshine-friendly space if you grab food from the cafe.

Newman Cafe

The Newman Cafe is located on the first floor of the building. Students can swipe meal cards, and the cafe serves Breakfast All Day. Its hours are Sunday–Thursday 8:00 am–2:00 pm during the academic year, and it is closed during UMass breaks.

Before You Go

Building hours vary by day and by whether the academic year is in session, and the cafe keeps shorter hours than the building itself. If you can't find what you're looking for or have questions, the center lists a phone number (413-549-0300) and an email address ([email protected]) for inquiries.
