How to Get Started with Carrd

Updated

You can start building on Carrd without signing up: open the site, choose a starting point (a template or a blank page), and design your one-page site in the editor. To save your work, publish it, and keep it available later, you need a free Carrd account. A free account supports up to three sites and all core features; Pro features like custom domains and extra sites require a paid upgrade.

What Carrd Is

Carrd is a platform for building simple, fully responsive one-page sites — a personal profile, a landing page to capture emails, or something more elaborate. Sites are responsive out of the box across phones, tablets, and desktops, and the core product is free.

Step-by-Step: Building Your First Site

  1. Open Carrd and pick a starting point. On the homepage, use "Choose a Starting Point." You can begin from one of dozens of templates or from a blank page. No signup is required to reach this step.
  2. Customize the page in the editor. Replace the template's placeholder text and images with your own content. Because Carrd is one-page by design, everything lives on a single scrolling page rather than a multi-page site structure.
  3. Create a free account to save and publish. Use "Sign Up" to create a free Carrd account. This is what lets you keep your site, publish it, and return to edit it later.
  4. Publish your site. Once published, the site is live and responsive at every screen size without extra configuration.

Expected result: a live, responsive one-page site tied to your account, editable at any time by logging back in.

Common Sticking Points

  • Skipping the account step. You can design before signing up, but without a free account you can't save or publish your work.
  • Hitting the three-site limit. The free plan caps you at three sites per account. If you need more, that's a Pro feature.
  • Expecting custom domains on free. Publishing to your own domain with full SSL support is Pro-only.
  • Assuming forms and embeds are included. Contact forms, signup forms (Mailchimp, Kit, ActiveCampaign, EmailOctopus, and others), payment-enabled forms, and third-party embeds are Pro features.
  • Wanting to remove branding. The "Made with Carrd" footer branding can only be removed on Pro.

Where to Get Help

Carrd's own menu links to Documentation (answers and instructions) and a Changelog (what's new and changed), plus a Contact option for questions and comments. These are the first places to check when a specific setting or feature isn't behaving as expected.
