What Is Cloudflare's Internet Speed Test (speed.cloudflare.com)?

Updated

Cloudflare's Internet Speed Test is a free browser-based tool at speed.cloudflare.com that measures your connection's download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, and packet loss, then translates those numbers into a Network Quality Score for streaming, gaming, and video calls. Use it when you want a quick read on whether your connection can handle real-time applications, not just how fast a file downloads. It runs in the browser with no account required, and it is powered by Cloudflare's global edge network.

What the test measures

The results page reports five raw metrics:

Metric What it tells you
Download How fast data moves from the network to your device
Upload How fast data moves from your device to the network
Latency Round-trip delay, shown in milliseconds
Jitter Variation in latency between measurements
Packet Loss Percentage of data packets that fail to arrive

Latency and jitter are displayed as paired values (for example, "0 ms 0 ms"), reflecting that the test samples these repeatedly rather than reporting a single reading.

The Network Quality Score

Beyond raw numbers, the test produces a Network Quality Score broken into three use cases:

  • Streaming — whether your connection can sustain video playback without buffering
  • Gaming — whether latency and jitter are low enough for responsive play
  • Video Calls — whether the connection can carry two-way audio and video reliably

Each score shows as "pending" until the test completes. This framing matters because a connection can post a high download number and still score poorly for gaming or calls if latency and jitter are high. If your goal is a specific activity, read the matching score rather than the headline speed.

How to run it

  1. Open speed.cloudflare.com in your browser.
  2. Press Start to begin the test.
  3. Wait for the metrics and the three quality scores to populate.
  4. Note that a single run can consume up to 200MB of data — relevant if you are on a metered or mobile connection.

For a more representative picture, run the test more than once and at different times of day, since congestion and network conditions shift.

Privacy: what Cloudflare receives

When you run the test, Cloudflare receives:

  • Your IP address
  • An estimate of your location (country and city)
  • The Autonomous System Number (ASN) of your ISP

Cloudflare truncates the IP address it receives to /24 for IPv4 and /48 for IPv6. It shares anonymized measurement information — such as estimated geolocation and ASN — with measurement partners as part of a shared internet performance database, but does not share your IP address with those partners. The page states your IP address is shared with Cloudflare and processed under its privacy policy.

When to use it

Reach for this test when you need to judge whether a connection suits a particular activity — a video call, online gaming, or streaming — rather than only its raw throughput. Because it is browser-based and requires no install, it works as a quick check on a new network, before an important call, or when diagnosing why one application performs poorly while others seem fine.
