What Is Sheet Music Scanner?
Updated
Sheet Music Scanner is an iOS app that turns printed sheet music into playable audio. You point your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad camera at a page of music, and the app recognizes the notes and plays them back. It is aimed at anyone who has a piece of sheet music in front of them and wants to hear how it sounds without sitting down at an instrument or entering every note by hand.
The app is a universal iOS purchase, so one buy covers both iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. It works from a camera scan, an image in your photo library, or a PDF in a cloud drive.
How the scan-and-play flow works
The whole process is described as taking about two minutes:
- Get your device ready – launch the app on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
- Scan – point the camera at the sheet and take a picture, or browse to a PDF or image file instead.
- Play – choose an instrument, pick a speed, and let the app play the notes.
You can start playback from anywhere in the song by tapping the bar you want. As the music plays, the notes and symbols are highlighted.
What it can read
The app recognizes notation tied to melody, harmony, and rhythm, including:
- Treble, bass, and alto (viola) clefs
- Notes, including ties and duration dots
- Rests, accidentals, repeat signs, and triplets/tuplets
It also recognizes tied notes. Import works with common image types such as PNG, JPG, and TIFF, as well as PDF files.
Playback and instrument options
You are not limited to a single line or a single sound. The app supports:
- Multiple voices in tandem – for example, both piano hands at once or all the choir voices together
- Individual staffs played separately – for example, just the right or left piano hand
- Multiple pages
- Tempo range of 50 to 330 beats per minute
- Pitch standard adjustable from the standard 440 Hz across 380–480 Hz
- Pitch shift / transposition by semitones, up to two octaves up or down
- Actual instrument pitch for transposing instruments
The instrument list covers accordion, acoustic bass, alto sax, bagpipes, banjo, bass guitar, celeste, cello, choir, clarinet, double bass, flute, French horn, classical/clean/distorted guitar, glockenspiel, harp, mandolin, marimba, oboe, several organ types (percussive, pipe, reed, rock, tonewheel), piano, recorder, tenor sax, trombone, trumpet, tuba, vibraphone, viola, violin, and xylophone.
Export options
Beyond playback, the app can export your scanned music as MIDI, MusicXML, audio (M4A/AAC, MP3, WAV), or PDF to a cloud drive.
Who it is for
Sheet Music Scanner fits a specific need: you have printed or PDF sheet music and want a quick audio preview. It is not a notation editor or a practice tool that waits for you to play along. If your goal is to hear a piece before committing to learning it, or to check a harmony or rhythm by ear, the scan-then-play approach removes the manual note-entry step entirely.
