What Is Sigma Iota Chapter?
Updated
Sigma Iota Chapter is a local chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, based in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. It was chartered on May 14, 1946, as the first Omega Psi Phi chapter in the 12th District, and it is known as "The Kingpin Ques." According to the chapter's website, it is the only chapter west of the Colorado Rockies with a fraternity house and stands as one of the largest chapters in the 12th District and Northern California.
A chapter with deep Bay Area roots
Sigma Iota's history is tied to the post–World War II era. The chapter served as a stopping ground for many Omega Men who were discharged after the war in the Greater Bay Area. That role helped establish it as a lasting presence in the region, and it has remained active in community service for more than 76 years.
The chapter's nickname, "The Kingpin Ques," reflects its standing within the district. Its fraternity house—the Omega House—is a distinguishing feature, since no other chapter west of the Colorado Rockies has one.
What the chapter does
Sigma Iota's programming is built around the fraternity's Cardinal Principles: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. Its main public-facing efforts include:
- Mentorship — an immersive mentoring program that teaches and encourages African-American males to positively define, plan, pursue, and achieve their future.
- Omega Gents Program — connects students to positive post-secondary pursuits by providing resources and services to help them prepare for, enroll in, and graduate from a degree and/or certificate program.
- Scholarship — since 2008, the chapter has raised nearly $225,000 and awarded over 200 academic scholarships to young men and women throughout Bay Area communities.
- Friendship — works at the international, district, and local levels to retain active brothers and return inactive brothers to full participatory status.
- Uplift — community service programs and activities sustained over more than 76 years.
