Which platforms can run EasyABC?
Updated
EasyABC runs on Windows, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. The Guide to EasyABC (revision 2021/10/13, updated 2021/11/01) includes dedicated sections for each of these three platforms, so the official documentation covers setup guidance for all of them.
Platform support at a glance
| Platform | Covered in the guide | Notes from the source |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Yes — "Running in Windows" section | Listed as a supported environment |
| Linux | Yes — "Running in Linux" section | Listed as a supported environment |
| Raspberry Pi | Yes — "Running in Raspberry Pi" section | Listed as a supported environment |
The guide does not list macOS or other platforms among its running instructions, so Windows, Linux, and Raspberry Pi are the environments the documentation addresses.
What you need before running it
EasyABC is an open source ABC music notation editor. According to the guide, it was originally coded in Python 2, which is no longer supported, and the code has since been upgraded to run with Python 3. If you plan to run it from source rather than a packaged release, that Python 3 requirement is the key prerequisite to check first.
The guide also notes that to use EasyABC you should know the fundamentals of ABC music notation, though it is possible to learn the notation using the built-in ABC assist feature.
Where to get a maintained release
The program was created by Nils Liberg and released around 2014 on his own site. Since 2015 it has been maintained by Jan Wybren de Jong and Seymour Shlien and moved to SourceForge. Improvements are posted to de Jong's GitHub site as they are made, and a newer version is released on SourceForge once the code is stable.
That means the practical rule for getting a current build is: check SourceForge for the latest stable release rather than relying on the original 2014 distribution.
A note on the name
The guide warns that EasyABC should not be confused with "Efficient Approximate Bayesian Computation Sampling Schemes" or with various alphabet-learning programs for children — searches for the name can surface those unrelated projects.
