How to Participate in a Game of the Month Competition on CivFanatics

Updated

To participate, pick a current game from the site's list, play it under the competition's rules, and submit your results before that game's deadline. The site lists two active games at a time — for example, Classic GOTM 203 (Russia, Emperor) and C3C COTM 176 (India, Demigod), both with a submit-by date of Sep 30 — so your first decision is which of the two tracks you want to enter.

Step 1: Choose your game

The homepage separates current games from completed ones. Current games are the only ones open for submission; everything under "Completed Games" is closed.

Track Example current game Difficulty shown
Classic GOTM Classic GOTM 203, Russia Emperor
C3C COTM C3C COTM 176, India Demigod

Each listing names the civilization you play and the difficulty level, plus the submission deadline. Note the deadline before you start — it applies to that specific game.

Step 2: Learn the rules before you play

The site links a Code of Conduct and a FAQ alongside a Newbie's Guide to GOTM. Read these first, because GOTM is a competition with rules that constrain how you play, not just a saved game to load. The Newbie's Guide is the intended starting point if you have never entered before.

Step 3: Play the game

Play your chosen game to completion (or to whatever end state the competition accepts) following the Code of Conduct. Because results are compared across all entrants, playing outside the rules invalidates your submission.

Step 4: Submit your results

Use the Submit Results link to send in your game before the deadline. The site also maintains a Pantheon of Heroes — the record of past results — which is where your entry ultimately lands.

Where to get help and compare notes

  • Discussion Forum (general) and C3C S-GOTM Discussion Forum — for questions and strategy talk around the competitions.
  • Map Gallery — Civ3 map resources.
  • Civ3 RSS Feed — to follow updates without checking the page manually.

Common pitfalls

  • Missing the deadline. The submit-by date is per game; a game still shown as "current" is only open until that date.
  • Skipping the Code of Conduct. The rules affect what counts as a valid result, so read them before starting, not after finishing.
  • Confusing the two tracks. Classic GOTM and C3C COTM are separate competitions with separate game numbers, so make sure you submit to the right one.
