What is Karaoke Eternal?
Updated
Karaoke Eternal is a self-hosted, open karaoke party system. You run the server yourself, guests join from their phone's browser to search and queue songs, and the player runs fullscreen in a browser on whatever machine handles audio and video for the room. It fits people who want to host karaoke at home or at an event without a subscription service, ads, or telemetry, and who are willing to set up and run their own server.
How the three parts fit together
The project describes itself as having three parts:
| Part | What it does | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Server | Serves the web app and your media files | Self-hosted, "runs on pretty much anything" |
| App | Mobile web app for finding and queueing songs | Guest's phone browser |
| Player | Fullscreen playback for a room | Browser on the system handling audio/video |
The Player is technically part of the app, but it's meant to run fullscreen on the machine connected to the room's sound and display. Guests never install anything — they open a browser.
What it plays and what it supports
- MP3+G — MP3 audio with CDG lyrics, including zipped files
- MP4 videos
- Music-synced visualizations with automatic lyrics background removal (WebGL)
Party features
- Fast, modern mobile browser app designed for "karaoke conditions"
- Easy joining with QR codes and guest accounts
- Multiple simultaneous rooms/queues, optionally password-protected
- Dynamic queues intended to keep parties fair and low-fuss
What it deliberately doesn't do
Microphones are not required, because the player only outputs music. That means your audio setup can be as simple or as complex as you want — the app isn't handling mic input or mixing. There are also no ads and no telemetry, and the whole thing is fully self-hosted.
Installation and getting help
Several installation methods are available for Karaoke Eternal Server. The site points to a step-by-step Getting Started guide plus separate documentation for the Server, App, and Player, covering media files, metadata parsing, the CLI and ENV, and file locations. For questions, there's a Discord server for support and development chat, and the GitHub project page for contributing and development.
Who this is for
Choose Karaoke Eternal if you want full control over your karaoke library and hosting, you're comfortable running a self-hosted server, and you like the idea of guests queueing from their own phones with no app install. Look elsewhere if you want a managed service with no setup, or if you need the software itself to handle microphone audio.
