How does the ToPL pinball league season work?
Updated
ToPL (The Toronto Pinball League, topl.ca) runs a season as a series of weekly play nights, followed by a playoff tournament at the end. You qualify for season standings and WPPR (World Pinball Player Ranking) points by playing at least 4 weeks, and the season wraps with a playoff split into divisions by skill level. The league also caps how many players it accepts per season, so you need to contact the organizers before showing up if you want a spot.
Weekly play and qualification
The season is built around regular weekly sessions rather than a single event. Players accumulate results across those weeks, and attendance is what determines whether you're eligible for end-of-season recognition.
- Play at least one week to be counted as a participant in the season.
- Play at least 4 weeks to qualify for WPPR points.
- Season standings are based on your accumulated weekly results.
In the most recent completed season (Season 4, 2026), more than 50 people played at least one week, and 34 played enough weeks to qualify for WPPRs.
End-of-season playoffs
After the weekly season ends, ToPL holds a playoff tournament. In the 2026 season this drew 41 players, including returning veterans and first-time participants.
The playoffs are split into divisions so players compete against others at a similar level:
| Division | 2026 result |
|---|---|
| A | 1st Scott I, 2nd Mike W, 3rd Scott T, 4th Sergio |
| B | 1st Colin, 2nd Evan, 3rd Mario, 4th Gary |
Two season-long awards also carry a practical prize: the season championship (tied by Sergio and Donna) and Most Improved (Donna) each earn a replay into the next season.
Planned changes for future seasons
ToPL has said it is already discussing format changes based on what didn't work well, particularly in B division, which grew larger than expected and required a last-minute format shift to fit everyone.
- Likely split into three playoff divisions (A/B/C), with payouts for all three, assuming enough players.
- Format adjustments in those divisions aimed at maximizing the number of games played and minimizing waiting time.
- More reliable game availability, so the league doesn't end up short on working machines again.
These are stated plans, not confirmed rules — the exact format depends on final player numbers.
Player cap and how to join
ToPL announced a limit of 48 players for the next season, and reported it was already close to that limit before the season started. If you want to play:
- Contact the league in advance to confirm there's room.
- Do this before attending a Monday night at Nick's, since the organizers want to know headcount ahead of time.
The site does not list pricing or a signup form in the available material, so treat the cap and the "get in touch first" step as the key requirements rather than assuming walk-ins are accepted.
