What Is LiveCodes?
Updated
LiveCodes is a browser-based code playground: you open it, write code, and run it without setting up a local environment. That makes it a good fit when you want to test a snippet, demonstrate an idea, or share runnable code with someone else. It is less suited to building a full application with dependencies, build tooling, and deployment.
What "code playground" means here
A code playground is an editor plus a runtime in one page. You type code into an editor pane, and the result appears in a preview pane. The value is the missing setup step: no installing a runtime, no configuring a bundler, no creating a project folder.
LiveCodes describes itself as "A Code Playground That Just Works!" — the emphasis is on starting immediately rather than configuring first.
What you can expect to do with it
- Write and run code directly in the browser
- Iterate on a small piece of logic and see the result right away
- Share or demonstrate a code snippet so someone else can run it
- Try something out without touching your local machine's setup
What it is not
A playground is not a replacement for a real development environment. If your task involves installing packages, managing multiple files with a build step, or deploying a service, you will eventually need local tooling or a hosted development environment. LiveCodes fits the phase before that — the quick check, the isolated example, the shareable demo.
A practical way to decide
Use LiveCodes when the question is "does this snippet work?" or "how do I show this to someone?" Reach for a full environment when the question is "how do I ship this?"
One caveat: the site loads its interface with JavaScript, so a browser with JavaScript enabled is required. If you open it with scripting disabled, you will see a loading message instead of the editor.
