How Lent and Advent Change the Mass and Adoration Schedule at Our Lady of Peace & Blessed Dominic Barberi

Updated

Lent and Advent change three things at this parish: Wednesday Mass moves earlier to 6.30 am, Friday Adoration ends at 6.00 pm instead of 6.30 pm, and Stations of the Cross are added at 6.00 pm on Fridays followed by Holy Mass. Everything else in the weekly timetable stays as normal, but the parish asks you to confirm details in the latest newsletter because the schedule also shifts for weddings, pilgrimages and feast days.

The regular schedule these changes apply to

The seasonal adjustments only make sense against the normal timetable:

Day Regular schedule
Sunday Mass at 8.30 am, 11.00 am and 5.00 pm
Monday Mass at 6.30 pm
Tuesday Mass at 8.00 am
Wednesday Mass at 8.00 am
Friday Mass at 6.30 pm
Friday Adoration 11.00 am to 6.30 pm
Reconciliation Mondays, Fridays and Holy Days of Obligation, 5.30 pm–6.30 pm, or by private appointment with Fr Stan

What changes during Lent and Advent

Wednesday Mass moves to 6.30 am

On Wednesdays in Lent and Advent, Mass is celebrated at 6.30 am instead of the usual 8.00 am. This is the only weekday Mass that shifts for the season. If you normally attend the 8.00 am Wednesday Mass, plan for an earlier start during these periods.

Friday Adoration ends earlier

During Lent, Adoration runs from 11.00 am to 6.00 pm rather than the usual 11.00 am to 6.30 pm. The half-hour difference exists because the evening programme continues with Stations of the Cross.

Stations of the Cross and Mass follow Adoration

During Lent, Stations of the Cross begin at 6.00 pm and are followed by Holy Mass. This is why Adoration closes at 6.00 pm — the church moves straight into the Stations and then Mass, rather than holding a separate Adoration hour before the evening Mass.

A worked example

Say you want to attend Mass and Adoration on a Friday in Lent:

  1. Arrive for Adoration between 11.00 am and 6.00 pm (not 6.30 pm).
  2. Stay for Stations of the Cross at 6.00 pm.
  3. Remain for Holy Mass immediately afterwards.

On a Wednesday in Lent, the same planning means arriving for 6.30 am Mass instead of 8.00 am.

Why you should still check the newsletter

The seasonal pattern above is the baseline, but the parish timetable changes for other reasons too, and the newsletter is the authoritative source. Recent examples from the parish:

  • Friday 18th September: Holy Mass in the morning at 8.15 am; no Adoration because of a wedding, and no evening Mass at the church because of a Centenary Mass at English Martyrs Church.
  • Parish pilgrimage (Tuesday 22nd to Thursday 24th September): no weekday Mass. The parish office was also closed from Tuesday 22nd to Tuesday 29th September.
  • Feast of the Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel & Raphael (Tuesday 29th September): Holy Mass at the church at 6.30 pm.

None of these are Lent or Advent changes, but they show how quickly a published timetable can be overridden. The parish's own instruction is to always check the latest newsletter due to changes in the weekly timetable for Mass.

Adoration outside the Lent pattern

Adoration is not limited to the Friday slot. The parish also invites people to Adoration on Monday and Friday from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm, followed by the Rosary and Holy Mass. Note that the full Friday Adoration block (11.00 am onwards) was set to resume after a summer break on Friday 25th September 2026, with the shorter Monday and Friday 5.00–6.00 pm sessions running in the meantime.

Quick reference

Element Regular Lent / Advent
Wednesday Mass 8.00 am 6.30 am
Friday Adoration 11.00 am–6.30 pm 11.00 am–6.00 pm
Stations of the Cross Not listed 6.00 pm, followed by Holy Mass
Reconciliation Mon, Fri, Holy Days 5.30–6.30 pm Same, but confirm in newsletter

If you are planning around a specific date, treat the table above as the seasonal rule and the current newsletter as the final word.
