What Information Does Descent Display and Where Does It Come From?

Updated

Descent (descent.live) is a now-playing display that shows two things: your current Last.fm track metadata and local weather. Both come from outside sources — Last.fm supplies the song data, and the weather is local to the viewer. To see anything, you enter your Last.fm username on the page, and the display reflects whatever that account is publicly scrobbling.

What Descent shows

The display combines two data streams into one screen:

  • Now-playing song metadata from Last.fm — the track currently associated with your Last.fm account, shown as song metadata rather than a static list.
  • Local weather — current conditions for the viewer's location, presented alongside the track.

The page is built as an "elegant now playing display," so the emphasis is on a clean visual readout of the current track plus weather, not on history, charts, or library browsing.

Where the data comes from

Displayed element Source What it depends on
Song metadata Last.fm now-playing data Your Last.fm account and its public playing status
Weather Local weather The location the weather is resolved for

The song side is not stored or generated by Descent itself — it reads from Last.fm. That means the accuracy and freshness of the track depend entirely on what Last.fm has for your account at that moment.

How the display updates

Because it is a now-playing display, the content changes as your playback changes. When Last.fm registers a new current track, the song metadata on the page follows. The weather component is separate and reflects local conditions rather than your listening activity.

A practical consequence: if nothing is currently playing or Last.fm has no recent now-playing entry for the account, there is no fresh track to show.

What you need for it to work

  • A Last.fm username. The page asks you to "enter your Last.fm username," so the display is keyed to a specific account rather than being generic.
  • Public playing status on that account. The data depends on Last.fm's now-playing information being available for the username you enter. If the account's activity isn't exposed, Descent has nothing to pull.

Quick answers

Does Descent show my listening history? No — it shows the current now-playing track, not a history or stats view.

Does Descent generate the song data itself? No. Song metadata comes from Last.fm; weather is local.

Why is my track not updating? The display follows Last.fm's now-playing data, so check that something is actively playing and that your Last.fm account exposes that status.

Do I need an account on Descent? The page only asks for your Last.fm username; the setup is about pointing it at an existing Last.fm account.
