Why Is Descent Not Showing My Now Playing Song or Weather?
Updated
Descent reads your Last.fm profile and shows whatever is publicly available there, so a blank or stale display almost always traces back to one of four things: a mistyped username, no recent scrobble, a private listening history, or a weather setting that hasn't been configured or permitted. Check them in that order — the first three explain most missing-song cases, and the last one explains a missing weather panel.
Confirm the username you entered
Descent's landing page asks for one thing: enter your Last.fm username:. That field expects your Last.fm username, not your display name, email, or profile URL.
- Open your Last.fm profile in another tab and copy the string that appears after
last.fm/user/. - Paste it into Descent's field and submit.
- If the display stays empty after submitting, re-enter the username rather than assuming the site is broken — a single wrong character produces the same blank result as a private profile.
If you're unsure which name is which, the URL is the reliable source: the username in the address bar is the one Descent needs.
Check that Last.fm actually has something to show
Descent can only display what Last.fm reports. If nothing is scrobbling, there is nothing to render.
- Play a track in a scrobbling-enabled player and confirm it appears on your Last.fm profile page under "Now Playing" or in your recent tracks.
- If Last.fm itself shows nothing, the problem is upstream of Descent — fix scrobbling first, then reload Descent.
- If Last.fm shows a track but Descent doesn't, the issue is on Descent's side of the read, which points to the next two checks.
A useful test: leave a track playing for a minute or two. Some players only report to Last.fm after a threshold, so a track you just started may not have registered yet.
Verify your listening data is public
Descent reads publicly visible Last.fm data. If your recent listening is hidden, Descent has nothing to pull, even with a correct username.
- Open your Last.fm profile in a private/incognito window, logged out.
- If your recent tracks are visible there, your data is public and Descent should be able to read it.
- If they're hidden, adjust your Last.fm privacy settings so recent listening is visible, then reload Descent.
This is the most common cause of "correct username, still empty" — the account exists and is spelled right, but the data isn't exposed.
Weather: check settings and location permission
Weather is a separate part of the display from your song metadata, so a working song panel with no weather means the two are failing independently.
- Open Descent's settings (linked on the landing page) and look for a location option.
- If Descent asks the browser for location access, grant it — a denied or dismissed permission prompt leaves the weather area empty.
- If you'd rather not share precise location, set a location manually in settings if that option is offered, then reload.
Because weather depends on a location value, it can fail while your Last.fm data loads perfectly. Treat a missing weather panel as a settings/permission problem, not a Last.fm problem.
Quick diagnostic order
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all after submitting | Username typo or wrong name format | Re-copy the username from your Last.fm URL |
| Username correct, still empty | Listening history not public | Check your profile in a logged-out window |
| Profile has tracks, Descent doesn't | No recent scrobble yet | Play a track and wait for it to register |
| Song shows, weather doesn't | Location not set or permission denied | Set location in settings / allow browser location |
Work down this list rather than changing several things at once — each fix is independently verifiable, so you'll know which one actually solved it.
