How Do I Know If I or a Loved One Qualifies for JABA Services?
Updated
JABA serves three broad groups: adults age 60 and older, adults with disabilities, and caregivers — but you must also live in its service area, which covers Charlottesville City and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson in Central Virginia. If you or the person you're helping falls into one of those groups and lives in that region, you likely qualify for at least some JABA services. The only way to confirm your specific situation is to contact JABA directly.
The two things that determine eligibility
JABA's own description of who it serves comes down to two filters: who you are and where you live. Both need to line up.
1. Who you are
JABA groups the people it supports into three categories:
| Group | Who this includes |
|---|---|
| Adults 60+ | Older adults who want peer connections, insurance counseling, nutrition help, medical care access, or advocacy |
| Adults with disabilities | Adults needing disability resources and related support |
| Caregivers | Anyone supporting a friend or family member who needs extra help |
JABA also notes it has "something for people of all ages," including intergenerational connections and volunteer opportunities — so some programs aren't limited to the three groups above.
2. Where you live
As an Area Agency on Aging, JABA's services are located in:
- Charlottesville City
- Albemarle County
- Fluvanna County
- Greene County
- Louisa County
- Nelson County
If you live outside these areas, JABA is probably not your starting point — but a call can point you toward the right regional agency.
Matching yourself to the right service entry point
JABA organizes its help by audience, so the fastest way to know what you qualify for is to identify which group fits:
- If you're 60 or older: look at JABA's services for older adults — peer groups, insurance counseling, nutrition, medical care access, and advocacy.
- If you're supporting someone else: look at caregiver support, which covers both the person receiving care and you as the caregiver, including help navigating complex situations.
- If you're an adult with a disability, or want volunteer or intergenerational programs: look at JABA's "other services."
How to confirm your eligibility
- Identify your group using the table above (60+, adult with a disability, or caregiver).
- Confirm your location against the six areas listed.
- Contact JABA to describe your situation. Because programs differ by audience and JABA frames its support around individual goals, staff can tell you which specific services apply to you — this is the step that turns a general "probably" into a definite answer.
Common sticking points
- Age 60 is the threshold for older-adult services. If you're under 60 without a disability, your path is more likely through caregiver support, volunteer programs, or intergenerational offerings rather than older-adult services.
- Caregivers qualify in their own right. You don't have to be 60+ or have a disability to get help — JABA explicitly offers resources for the person doing the caring.
- Location is a hard filter. Living outside the six listed areas usually means JABA isn't the right agency for you, even if your age or situation matches.
- "Qualifies" isn't all-or-nothing. JABA describes comprehensive resources across many programs; a single call is the reliable way to learn which ones fit.
