How to Contribute to the Official Kodi Wiki
Updated
The Official Kodi Wiki is maintained by the open community together with Team Kodi members, and the wiki itself states that you can contribute back by helping to update it. The one hard gate to know up front: new account registrations are disabled on this wiki, so you cannot simply sign up. If you want an account to help edit, you have to request one through the wiki's account request page. Everything else below assumes you either already have an account or are waiting on one.
What "contributing" actually means here
Contributing is not limited to writing brand-new pages. The wiki's own navigation lists several maintenance-oriented entry points alongside the content sections:
- Editing existing pages (the standard "edit" action on any page)
- Working through Pages to cleanup
- Filling in Incomplete pages
- Using the Templates and Wiki help pages to follow formatting conventions
- Tracking what's changed via Recent changes
The wiki also exposes the usual MediaWiki tooling that supports this work: What links here, Related changes, Special pages, Printable version, Permanent link, and Page information. These are useful when you are checking whether a page is orphaned, how it's linked, or what its revision history looks like before you change it.
Getting an account
Because registration is closed, the path is a request, not a signup:
- Go to the wiki's account request page (linked from the main page as a request for Wiki accounts).
- Submit a request for an account.
- Once you have an account, log in and use the normal edit tools.
The main page does not publish a turnaround time or approval criteria for these requests, so treat the wait as unknown rather than assuming instant access.
A practical editing workflow
Once you can edit, a low-risk loop looks like this:
- Find work. Check Pages to cleanup and Incomplete pages for pages the community has already flagged.
- Read the conventions first. Look at Wiki help and Templates so your formatting matches existing pages instead of introducing a new style.
- Check the page's history and links. Use Page information and What links here to understand what depends on the page before you rewrite it.
- Make the edit. Use the standard edit action, and write a short edit summary so others can follow Recent changes.
- Verify. Re-open the page in read view and confirm the rendered result, not just the source.
Expected result: your change appears in the page history and in Recent changes, and any page you fixed drops off the cleanup/incomplete lists once someone confirms it.
Common sticking points
- No self-service signup. If you skip the request step and look for a "create account" link, you won't find an open one — registration is disabled by design.
- Style drift. Editing without checking Templates and Wiki help tends to produce pages that don't match the rest of the wiki and get re-flagged for cleanup.
- Editing blind. Changing a heavily linked page without checking What links here can break navigation elsewhere.
- Licensing. Content on the wiki is available under Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported unless otherwise noted, so contributions fall under that license.
Where contribution fits alongside reading
If your goal is actually to use Kodi rather than maintain the wiki, the same main page routes you to the sections you'd want: Installing & First time user, FAQs, Troubleshooting, Settings, the Video/Movie/TV Show and Music libraries, Live TV, PVR & Radio, Add-ons, Skins, Devices / Hardware, and Remote Controls. Contribution is the maintenance layer on top of that same content — you're improving the pages other users read to solve those problems.
