What Is Clone Hero?

Updated

Clone Hero is a cross-platform rhythm game built around classic instrument controllers. According to its official site, it runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS, and it supports 5-fret or 6-fret guitar controllers, MIDI drum kits, standard game controllers, and even a keyboard. It offers local play, online multiplayer, and global leaderboards, so it works both as a solo practice tool and a competitive platform.

What kind of game is it?

It belongs to the instrument-based rhythm game genre — the same family as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. You play by hitting notes in time with music, using a guitar controller, drum kit, or another supported input. The official description calls it "a classic instrument based rhythm game," which places it firmly in that tradition rather than in general music or party game categories.

What can you play it on?

Platform Supported
Windows Yes
Mac Yes
Linux Yes
Android Yes
iOS Yes

Because it is cross-platform, your choice of device depends mainly on which controller you want to use and where you prefer to play.

What controllers work?

  • 5-fret guitar controllers
  • 6-fret guitar controllers
  • MIDI drum kits
  • Any game controller
  • Keyboard

The site states it is "playable with any 5 or 6 fret guitar controller, any midi drum kit, any game controller and even your keyboard." That flexibility is a key reason it appeals to players who already own older rhythm-game hardware.

What game modes are available?

  • Local play — play on your own setup.
  • Online multiplayer — play with others over the network.
  • Global leaderboards — compare scores with players worldwide.

Whether you are on drums, 5-fret guitar, or 6-fret guitar, the site says you can "jump into the action" across these modes.
