Sandbox Automatic Closed Its Store: Where to Buy CDs and Vinyl Now

Updated

Sandbox Automatic's own storefront is winding down after 1995–2025, and its remaining physical music inventory is being consolidated on Discogs under the seller mercerem. If you came here looking for the old CD page, the replacement is the seller's CD-filtered Discogs profile. Vinyl has actually been sold through that same Discogs account since 2008, so the change mainly affects CDs and other formats.

What changed at Sandbox Automatic

The site's notice states that, for future inventory efficiency, all CDs are being moved to Discogs to merge with the vinyl records already selling there since 2008. In-stock titles, including new and recent releases, were set to begin transferring around December 16 and continue through the end of the month and beyond.

The store's footer dates the operation as 1995–2025, overseen by Smiley, with original artwork by joebuckart.

Where to buy CDs and vinyl now

What you want Where to go
CDs only Discogs seller mercerem, filtered to CD

The CD-only page is the direct replacement for the old CD section. The unfiltered seller profile is the better starting point if you collect across formats, since it shows everything listed rather than just CDs.

If you ordered from Sandbox Automatic before

Customers who placed an order on the site within roughly the last year should receive an email with further information about special orders and international shipping, where applicable. If you're in that group, watch the inbox tied to your order account before assuming an order status has changed.

Practical notes before you buy

  • Timing matters. The transfer was described as starting around December 16 and running through the month's end "and beyond," so early listings may not reflect the full inventory. Check back rather than treating the first visit as complete.
  • Format filters are your friend. Discogs seller pages let you narrow by format, which is why the CD-specific link exists — use it if you don't want to scroll past vinyl and cassettes.
  • The old cart is gone. The site still shows a shopping cart shell, but purchasing has moved to Discogs, so build your order there.

For anyone who bought from Sandbox Automatic over the years, the Discogs seller profile is now the single place to browse what's left.
