Where and when does Keswick Mountaineering Club meet?

Updated

Keswick Mountaineering Club's regular weekly meet is on Tuesday: from April to September members gather on Tuesday afternoon and evening at local Lake District crags, and in winter the same Tuesday evening slot moves indoors to the Kong Adventure wall in Keswick. Beyond that weekly rhythm, the club runs weekend and longer meets in the Lake District and further afield, plus overseas trips in summer and winter.

The weekly Tuesday meet

The club's local crag to Keswick is Shepherd's Crag in Borrowdale, which is where you'd expect midweek climbing to centre when conditions allow. The club describes itself as based in the north of the Lake District and climbing at crags across that area.

Weekend and longer meets

Weekend meets run both in the Lake District and in other parts of the UK, including Scotland, Northumberland, the Peak District, Wales, and Cornwall/Devon.

Longer trips are seasonal:

  • Summer: meets in the Alps, the Dolomites, and/or Scotland — for example Ben Nevis or the Cuillin Ridge on Skye. These give bigger mountaineering challenges than the Lake District, often mixing mountaineering, rock climbing on lower crags, and via ferratas.
  • Scotland specifically: usually at least one meet a year, often a long weekend on Ben Nevis or a week on Skye's Cuillin Ridge. Poor-weather days are often used for scrambling.
  • Late October – mid April: a meet of one or two weeks somewhere sunny, such as Kalymnos, Costa Blanca, Cyprus, or Sicily, so members can climb outside in the dry.
  • Winter: occasional weekend or week meets in Scotland or Norway for ice climbing, plus a series of winter scrambling meets.

Winter evenings beyond the wall

The club also runs a series of winter lectures and film shows at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth.

Finding a partner for a meet

If you want to climb on a given day, the club points members to its "Partner wanted" forum and its Facebook group to find someone to climb with — useful when you're free at short notice and the weather is good.

What this means if you're deciding whether to join

The Tuesday meet is the reliable anchor: crags in summer, the Kong Adventure wall in winter. Everything else — weekend meets, Scottish trips, sunny winter destinations, ice climbing — is additional and varies by season and weather. If you can make Tuesday afternoons or evenings locally, you have a standing way to climb with the club; if you're mainly interested in bigger mountain or overseas trips, those depend on the meet calendar rather than a fixed weekly slot.
