How to Enroll in and Complete an NPTEL Course
Updated
NPTEL (nptel.ac.in) is an online learning initiative run by the IITs and IISc and funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. You can enroll in a course for free self-study, but completing it with a certificate requires two separate registrations: one for the course and one for the proctored exam. The steps below cover both, plus the timeline you need to watch.
Step 1: Find a course
Go to the Courses section of the site. NPTEL organizes its catalog in a few ways:
- NPTEL Courses — the main catalog of 3,200+ unique courses available for self-study, spanning engineering, sciences, humanities, and management.
- Domains — browse by subject area if you don't have a specific course in mind.
- Medical Courses — a separate set for medical and health-related subjects.
- SWAYAM & NPTEL — courses delivered through the national SWAYAM platform.
Each course page lists the syllabus, the instructor and host institute, the weekly lecture plan, and the assignment schedule. Check the semester (for example, Jan–Apr or Jul–Dec) because enrollment and exam windows are tied to it.
Step 2: Register for the course
Course registration is done through the course page, which links to the SWAYAM/NPTEL enrollment flow. You create an account, select the course, and confirm enrollment for the current semester.
Once enrolled, you get access to:
- Weekly video lectures (also mirrored on the NPTEL YouTube channel, which has 5.62 million+ subscribers and 1.86 billion+ views)
- Assignments released on a weekly schedule
- Discussion forums and, for some courses, live problem-solving sessions
Expected result: you appear on the course's enrolled-learner list and can start watching lectures and submitting assignments immediately.
Step 3: Complete the coursework
NPTEL courses run on a fixed semester timeline. To stay on track:
- Watch each week's lectures before attempting that week's assignment.
- Submit assignments by their deadlines — they typically contribute to your final score.
- Track your progress against the course's published schedule.
The site publishes Timelines and Guidelines and a List of courses for each semester under News & Announcements. Use these to confirm assignment due dates and the last date for exam registration, since these dates differ by semester.
Step 4: Register separately for the exam
This is the step most learners miss. Enrolling in a course does not register you for the exam. Exam registration opens in a separate window and must be completed on its own.
- Watch the News & Announcements section for the exam registration window (for example, certain July 2025 and Jan 2026 semester courses were opened for exam registration at the time of writing).
- Register and pay the exam fee within that window if you intend to earn a certificate.
- Choose an exam center during registration.
NPTEL reports 3.79 crore+ enrollments and 75.6 lakh+ exam registrations, which reflects how many learners stop at the course stage versus going on to the exam.
Step 5: Take the proctored exam and get your certificate
The exam is conducted in person at designated centers under supervision. Your final score combines assignment performance and the exam result, and a certificate is issued to learners who meet the course's cutoff. Certificates are distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA) license.
Quick reference
| Stage | Where | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Browse courses | Courses section | Pick the right semester |
| Enroll in course | Course page / SWAYAM | Free self-study access |
| Submit assignments | Course dashboard | Weekly deadlines |
| Register for exam | News & Announcements window | Separate registration, opens and closes on a fixed date |
| Take exam | Designated center | In-person, proctored |
Common pitfalls
- Assuming course enrollment covers the exam. It doesn't — you must register for the exam separately within its window.
- Missing the exam registration deadline. The window is narrow and semester-specific; check the announcements page regularly.
- Falling behind on assignments. They feed into your final score, so late or skipped weeks cost you.
- Ignoring the semester timeline. Courses, assignments, and exams are all tied to the Jan–Apr or Jul–Dec cycle.
