What Is Project2DFX and Which GTA Games Does It Support?

Project2DFX is a set of plugins for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV (including EFLC) that adds a LOD corona effect to the game map. The result is that the game's low-detail "LOD world" — the simplified geometry used for distant scenery — looks noticeably better at distance. It is distributed through ThirteenAG's GitHub warp zone, the same hub that hosts the Widescreen Fixes Pack and Fusion Fix, but it is a separate project with a different purpose.

What Project2DFX actually changes

GTA games render distant parts of the map with low-detail models to save performance. At night or in dim conditions, those distant models can look flat and lifeless compared to the fully rendered world up close. Project2DFX adds corona effects — the glowing light sprites you see around street lamps, signs, and other light sources — to that LOD layer.

The practical effect is a more continuous-looking world: distant streets, buildings, and landmarks keep their light points instead of fading into a dull silhouette. It does not add new geometry, textures, or gameplay content; it changes how existing distant scenery is lit.

Supported games

Game Supported
GTA III Yes
GTA Vice City Yes
GTA San Andreas Yes
GTA IV Yes
GTA IV: Episodes from Liberty City (EFLC) Yes

Each title uses its own plugin build, so the files are not interchangeable between games. Install the version that matches the specific GTA title you are modding.

How it relates to the other fixes on the same site

The warp zone groups several unrelated GTA projects together, which can make them look like one package:

  • Widescreen Fixes Pack — adjusts resolution and aspect ratio handling so widescreen displays work correctly.
  • Fusion Fix — a separate fix set for GTA IV: The Complete Edition.
  • Project2DFX — the LOD corona plugin described here.

They solve different problems and are installed independently. Wanting better distant lighting does not require the widescreen or Fusion Fix components, and vice versa.

Before you install

  • Confirm the plugin matches your exact GTA title and version — a San Andreas build will not work on GTA IV.
  • Check whether you are running the original release or a re-release/Complete Edition, since the correct files can differ.
  • Expect the change to be visual only: no new missions, vehicles, or map areas.

If your goal is a more convincing distant skyline and street lighting in one of the supported GTA games, Project2DFX is the component that addresses that specifically.
