How to Use donjon; RPG Tools for Dungeons & Dragons
donjon; RPG Tools is a free browser-based collection of random generators and calculators for tabletop RPGs, and you can use it to prepare D&D sessions without installing anything. The site organizes tools by game system, so D&D 5e, D&D 5.5, AD&D, and d20/Fantasy each get their own set of generators and reference pages. If you need a dungeon map, an NPC, an encounter, treasure, or a magic shop on short notice, the relevant tool is one click away from the homepage.
What donjon Offers for D&D
The homepage groups tools into General, Fantasy, and system-specific sections. For Dungeons & Dragons, the most relevant categories are:
- AD&D — Random Generator, Random Dungeon Generator, Five Room Dungeon Generator, Random Magic Shop Generator, Random Treasure Generator
- d20/Fantasy — Initiative Tracker, Power Attack Calculator, Random Generator, d20 Demographics Calculator, Random Dungeon Generator, Random Encounter Generator, Random Magic Shop Generator, Random Treasure Generator, Random Weather Generator, XP Calculator
- D&D 4e — Random Generator, Random Dungeon Generator, Random Encounter Generator, Random Treasure Generator
- D&D 5e — Quick Reference, Spell Sheet, Monster List, Magic Items, Encounter Size Calculator, Initiative Tracker, Random Generator, Random Dungeon Generator, Five Room Dungeon Generator, Random Encounter Generator, Random Magic Shop Generator, Random Treasure Generator
- D&D 5.5 — Quick Reference, Spell Sheet, Monster List, Magic Items, Random Generator, Random Dungeon Generator, Five Room Dungeon Generator, Random Encounter Generator, Random Magic Shop Generator, Random Treasure Generator
The Fantasy section also carries a Fantasy Name Generator, Fantasy Calendar Generator, Fantasy World Generator, Medieval Demographics Calculator, Random Campaign, Random Adventure Generator, Treasure Map Generator, Random Inn Generator, and Random Town Generator — all usable alongside a D&D campaign even though they aren't filed under a specific edition.
Generating a Dungeon
The Random Dungeon Generator appears under every D&D edition category, plus AD&D and d20/Fantasy. The workflow is the same regardless of which edition link you follow:
- Open the Random Dungeon Generator from the edition you're running.
- Set the parameters the form offers (size, layout style, and similar options).
- Generate the map and read the result as a room-and-corridor layout you can key yourself.
The Five Room Dungeon Generator, available under AD&D, D&D 5e, and D&D 5.5, produces a smaller five-room structure instead — useful when you want a self-contained side quest rather than a full megadungeon. There is also a Random Dungeon Wallpaper under Appendix if you just want a map image for a screen or handout.
Populating the Dungeon: NPCs, Encounters, Treasure, Shops
Once the layout exists, the site's other generators fill it in:
- NPCs — the NPC Generator appears under Avatar Legends, CoC, Alien RPG, Blade Runner, and Job Generator contexts; for D&D specifically, the Random Generator under each edition category covers character and content rolls.
- Encounters — Random Encounter Generator is listed under d20/Fantasy, D&D 4e, D&D 5e, and D&D 5.5.
- Treasure — Random Treasure Generator is listed under AD&D, d20/Fantasy, D&D 4e, D&D 5e, and D&D 5.5.
- Magic shops — Random Magic Shop Generator is listed under AD&D, d20/Fantasy, D&D 5e, and D&D 5.5.
Each of these is a separate page with its own form. You generate, read the output, and either use it as-is or reroll until it fits your campaign.
Running the Session: Trackers and Calculators
Beyond content generation, donjon provides tools for the table itself:
- Initiative Tracker — listed under d20/Fantasy and D&D 5e.
- XP Calculator — listed under d20/Fantasy.
- Encounter Size Calculator — listed under D&D 5e.
- Power Attack Calculator — listed under d20/Fantasy and Pathfinder.
- d20 Demographics Calculator — listed under d20/Fantasy.
These are calculation aids rather than random generators: you enter the relevant numbers, and the tool returns the derived value (encounter budget, XP total, initiative order, and so on).
Quick Reference Sheets
For D&D 5e and D&D 5.5, donjon hosts reference pages rather than generators:
- Quick Reference
- Spell Sheet
- Monster List
- Magic Items
These are lookup pages you can keep open during play instead of flipping through books.
Practical Notes
- Every tool is a separate page reached from the homepage category lists; there is no single unified interface.
- The site also lists a Site Index, Code Library, Download Apps, and an Art Collection under Appendix, plus a Dark Mode toggle.
- The page shows #StandWithUkraine and links to Buy Me a Coffee, Patreon, and Bluesky — support links, not paywalls. The page evidence does not state pricing terms, so treat any cost or login requirement as unconfirmed rather than assuming the tools are free or account-free.
- Because the generators are random, expect to reroll: generate several results and keep the ones that fit your campaign rather than accepting the first output.
If you're prepping a D&D session and need a dungeon, an encounter, treasure, or a shop in a hurry, start at the edition category matching your game and work down the list — the generators are independent, so you can use only the ones you need.
