How can I find study programmes and study modes at the University of Malta?

Updated

Start at the Study section of um.edu.mt. It is the entry point for prospective students and gathers the course search, admissions guidance, key dates, fees and funding, and the different study levels in one place. From there you can filter courses by level and by mode of study (full-time or part-time), and follow through to admissions and deadlines once you have a shortlist.

Where the Study section sits

The site is organised around a small number of top-level areas, and Study is the one aimed at applicants. Inside it you will find:

  • Undergraduate
  • Postgraduate
  • Doctoral School
  • Foundation Studies
  • Admissions and advice
  • Dates and deadlines
  • Fees and funding
  • DegreePlus
  • Micro-credentials
  • Auditing
  • Study at your own pace
  • International Student English Test
  • MATSEC Board
  • Junior College

If you are already enrolled, the Current students area (Portal, eSIMS, UM courses, VLE, WISEflow, Library, Mail, My UM app) is the equivalent hub for your day-to-day needs.

Finding a course

The course search sits within the Study area and lets you narrow results in two main ways:

  1. Mode of Study — choose Full-time or Part-time.
  2. Course Level — choose from A-Z, All Courses, Undergraduate, Postgraduate & Research, or Micro-credentials.

Enter a search term if you already have a subject in mind, or browse by level if you are still exploring. The result is a filtered list of programmes you can then check individually for entry requirements and deadlines.

Study levels at a glance

Level What it covers
Undergraduate First degrees and entry-level programmes
Postgraduate & Research Master's, research degrees and related pathways
Doctoral School Doctoral-level study and supervision
Foundation Studies Preparatory study before degree-level entry
Micro-credentials Short, focused units of study
Junior College Pre-university stage
MATSEC Board Secondary-level certification body

Study modes and flexible options

Beyond the full-time/part-time split in the course search, the Study section lists several ways to engage that are not standard degree enrolment:

  • DegreePlus — additional skills and activities alongside your main programme.
  • Micro-credentials — short standalone units.
  • Auditing — attending a unit without the full assessment route.
  • Study at your own pace — a flexible route for those who cannot commit to a fixed timetable.

These are worth checking if you want to sample a subject, build specific skills, or study around other commitments rather than enrol in a full programme.

Next steps after you shortlist

Once you have a course in mind, the Study section links directly to the practical stages:

  • Admissions and advice — how to apply and who to ask.
  • Dates and deadlines — application windows and key dates.
  • Fees and funding — costs and available support.
  • Student life, Accommodation, International opportunities, Student societies — for planning beyond the classroom.
  • Info for international applicants — a separate route if you are applying from outside Malta.

Common sticking points

  • Level vs. mode are separate filters. A programme can be postgraduate and part-time; set both if you need a specific combination.
  • Micro-credentials and DegreePlus are not degrees. They appear in the same area but serve different purposes — check what each awards before applying.
  • International applicants have their own path. Use the international applicants info rather than the general admissions pages to avoid missing visa or English-test requirements.
  • Deadlines differ by programme. Always confirm on the individual course page rather than relying on a general date.
