What is War Memorials Online?

Updated

War Memorials Online (warmemorialsonline.org.uk) is a UK-wide public recording project run with the support of War Memorials Trust. Its purpose is to build a complete picture of the whereabouts, type and condition of all war memorials in the UK, so that they can be recorded, conserved and remembered. Anyone can use the site to search for memorials, and anyone can register to contribute information. It is useful if you want to find a local memorial, check whether one is already listed, or flag a memorial that is damaged or at risk.

What the site is for

The project describes itself as an opportunity for the public to upload images of war memorials and log conservation concerns. The idea is that community and historical records are only as good as the information people contribute, so the site depends on public input rather than a single central survey team.

According to the site, contributors have added over 80,000 war memorials and over 80,000 condition reports to date. That scale is the main reason to check the site before starting your own research: a memorial you are interested in may already have a record, photos and a condition history.

Core things you can do

Task What it involves
Find a memorial Search by keyword or by location, with an exact-match option and a radius from 1 mile up to 100 miles
Submit a memorial Add a memorial that is not yet recorded
Report a concern Tell the project about memorials that are in poor condition, damaged or vandalised
Donate Support the project financially to help protect war memorial heritage
Get involved Register to contribute information and images

How to take part

  1. Search first. Use keyword search if you know a name or inscription, or location search with a radius if you only know the area. This tells you whether the memorial already has a record and what condition it is in.
  2. Register if you want to contribute. The site states that you register to contribute information; browsing and searching are presented as ways to explore the site.
  3. Add what you know. Contributions take the form of memorial records, images, and condition reports. The condition report is the part that feeds directly into conservation concern.
  4. Report a concern separately if needed. If a memorial is in poor condition, damaged or vandalised, the site has a dedicated "Report a concern" route rather than leaving it only as a general record.

Who runs it and how to contact

War Memorials Online operates c/o War Memorials Trust, 70 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EJ. The site lists a telephone number (020 7233 7356), an email contact, and policies covering terms and conditions, acceptable use, privacy and cookies. War Memorials Trust is listed as a registered charity (number 1201442).

When this site is the right starting point

  • You want to know whether a specific UK war memorial is already recorded, and in what condition.
  • You have photographs or local knowledge of a memorial and want them preserved in a public record.
  • You have seen a memorial that is damaged or neglected and want to flag it for conservation attention.
  • You want to support war memorial heritage work, either by contributing records or by donating.

If your interest is a memorial outside the UK, or you need conservation work carried out rather than reported, this site is a recording and signposting project rather than a repair service — the "Report a concern" route is how you pass the issue on.
