How to Find or Submit a War Memorial on War Memorials Online
Updated
War Memorials Online (warmemorialsonline.org.uk) lets anyone search for UK war memorials by keyword or location, and registered contributors can add new memorials or submit condition reports. You can browse and search without an account, but you need to register and log in to contribute information. To date, contributors have added over 80,000 war memorials and over 80,000 condition reports to the site.
Finding a war memorial
The site offers two search routes from its "Find or submit a war memorial" section:
- Keyword Search — search by a memorial's name or other text details.
- Location Search — search by place, with an option to set how close results must be.
For location searches, you can choose a distance radius: Exact, or within 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, or 100 miles. Pick a radius that matches what you need — a tight radius for a single village or town, a wider one if you are mapping memorials across a region.
Steps:
- Go to the site and open the search area under "Find or submit a war memorial."
- Choose Keyword Search or Location Search.
- Enter your term or place, and for location searches set the distance radius.
- Run the search and open a result to see the memorial's recorded details.
Expected result: a list of matching memorials you can open individually. If nothing matches, the memorial may not yet be recorded — which is where submitting comes in.
Submitting a memorial or a condition report
Anyone can help, but contributing requires an account. The site states: "Register to contribute information or explore the site to find out more about war memorials." A Login link sits in the site menu.
Steps:
- Register, then log in.
- Use the submit option under "Find or submit a war memorial" to add a memorial that is not yet listed.
- Provide the memorial's details — the site's purpose is to record the "whereabouts, type and condition" of memorials, so expect to supply location, type, and condition information, along with images.
- Upload images of the memorial.
- If a memorial is already listed but its condition has changed, use "Report a concern" instead.
Report a concern is the route for memorials that are "in poor condition, damaged or vandalised." Use it to log a conservation concern rather than to create a new record.
Expected result: your submission adds to the national picture of memorials and their condition, and logged concerns feed into conservation efforts.
What to check before you submit
- Is it already listed? Search by keyword and by location first — with over 80,000 memorials recorded, a duplicate is easy to create by accident.
- Do you have images? The project is built on the public uploading images of war memorials, so photos are central to a useful record.
- Is this a new memorial or a condition issue? New or unrecorded memorials go through the submit route; damage, vandalism, or poor condition goes through "Report a concern."
- Are you logged in? Browsing and searching work without an account; contributing does not.
