What are Friendly Street Poets' annual anthology, New Poets, and Single Poet publications?

Updated

Friendly Street Poets (FSP) is an Adelaide poets' collective running since 1975, and it publishes through three main channels: an annual anthology, the New Poets series, and the Single Poet award. Each year the collective releases one anthology that also carries two named prizes (Satura and Nova), while New Poets and Single Poet are separate, judged opportunities that give selected poets a full publication. Winners, judges, and launch details are announced on the FSP website.

The annual anthology

FSP produces one anthology per year, edited by two appointed editors. The 50th annual anthology, Quintessence, was edited by Val Braendler and Ben Adams and launched on 29 August 2026 at the Effective Living Centre.

Two prizes are awarded to poems published in each anthology:

Prize Awarded for
Satura Prize Best poem in the anthology
Nova Prize Best poem by a poet published for the first time in an FSP anthology

The 2026 anthology judge was Shaine Melrose. For Quintessence, the Nova Prize went to Kathryn von Bergen, and Satura recognition included highly commended entries by Rory Harris and Virginia Hussin, plus a commended entry by Valerie Volk.

New Poets

New Poets is an annual, judged selection published as a numbered volume — New Poets 27 was the 2026 edition. It is aimed at poets who have not yet published a collection, and the judges announce winners and commended entries before the book launch.

For New Poets 27, judged by Rob de Kok, the winners were:

  • Verity Laughton, Swallows
  • Rob McKinnon, ember rain
  • Tracy McNally, Wishing on Satellites

Highly commended: Polly Cass, Rivers and Roads.

Single Poet

Single Poet is a separate judged award that gives one poet a dedicated volume. Single Poet 2026 was judged by Steve Brock, with results:

  • Winner: Helen Hutton, the syntax of silence
  • Runner-up: Chelsea Avard, telling secrets
  • Highly commended: Amanda Solly, Encyclopedia Ephemera
  • Commended: Peter Mahoney, Putain Quais

The New Poets 27 and Single Poet 2026 volumes were scheduled to launch on Saturday 12 December at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Thebarton.

How the three fit together

  • Annual anthology — open to a broad pool of poets; the main yearly publication, with the Satura and Nova prizes attached.
  • New Poets — a judged pathway for emerging poets, published as a numbered series.
  • Single Poet — a judged award for a single poet's dedicated volume.

All three are announced on friendlystreetpoets.org.au, with posts listing editors, judges, winners, commended poets, and launch events. If you want to follow or enter, the site's announcement posts are the place to check each year's judges, deadlines, and launch dates.
