What Is SRUC?

Updated

SRUC is Scotland's enterprise university focused on the land-based and natural economy. It combines teaching, research, consulting, and veterinary services under one organisation, with a history going back over 100 years. If you are looking for courses in agriculture, land management, or related disciplines, or you need research-backed advice or veterinary diagnostics for a land-based business, SRUC is the relevant institution to check.

What SRUC offers

SRUC's work splits into four main areas, each with its own entry point on the website.

Study with us

  • Course catalogue — hundreds of courses across more than 20 disciplines, ranging from foundation courses through to postgraduate degrees.
  • Training courses — a training service covering a wide range of skills development courses aimed at the land-based workforce across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
  • Micro-credentials — short upskilling courses designed to fit around working and home life, with study "anytime, anywhere".
  • Open Days — campus visits where you can talk to course tutors and current students.

Business services

  • SAC Consulting — independent advice for agriculture and land-based businesses, grounded in the latest research, serving both businesses and the public sector.
  • Veterinary Services — support in animal disease, diagnosis, and surveillance.
  • Veterinary laboratory services — including named health schemes with published test and price lists:
    • Premium Cattle Health Scheme
    • Premium Sheep & Goat Health Scheme
    • Premium Cattle Health Scheme tests
    • Premium Sheep and Goat Health Scheme tests

Research

SRUC researchers work locally and internationally, partnering with industry and policy makers to design and deliver real-world change benefiting the natural economy. You can browse staff and projects through the Find an expert database, which covers all divisions, locations, and areas of expertise.

International students

If you are coming to study at SRUC from outside the UK, the International section collects the information you need in one place.

Practical notes

  • Prices are published for the health scheme tests. The Premium Cattle and Premium Sheep & Goat scheme pages link to dedicated test and price lists, so check those pages directly rather than assuming costs.
  • Micro-credentials are described as flexible, but the site does not state that they are free — check the individual course page for cost and enrolment terms.
  • Open Days are promoted on the homepage, so dates change; confirm current dates before travelling to a campus.

For anything beyond these entry points — specific entry requirements, scheme eligibility, or consulting engagement terms — the relevant service page is the authoritative source.
