Where and when does Brunswick SLSC patrol the beach?

Updated

Brunswick SLSC patrols from the Belongil Creek mouth in the south to the surf beaches of New Brighton and South Golden Beach in the north, on weekends and public holidays from September to April. If you are planning a swim, that is the window and the stretch of coast where the club's patrols operate.

Patrol area

The club's patrol responsibility covers a long section of the Far North Coast NSW shoreline:

  • Southern end: the mouth of Belongil Creek, where the beach terminates after sweeping 10.5 km south-east toward Byron Bay
  • Northern end: the surf beaches of New Brighton and South Golden Beach
  • Club base: South Beach Rd, Brunswick Heads NSW 2483 — about 400 metres south of the Brunswick River entrance wall

The Brunswick Heads beach itself sweeps south-east from the river entrance toward Byron Bay. The river entrance is trained by two prominent walls that define the northern end of the beach.

Patrol times

When Patrol status
Weekends, September to April Patrolled
Public holidays, September to April Patrolled
Weekdays, September to April Not covered by the club's stated patrol schedule
May to August Outside the stated patrol season

The club was formed in 1935 to safeguard bathers and fishermen, and its stated role is patrolling this area on weekends and public holidays from September to April. Outside those times, treat the beach as unpatrolled.

Conditions to expect

The club's own description of the water is a useful warning for anyone deciding where to swim:

  • Double bar system dominated by rips on the surf beach
  • A prominent rip running out against the southern training wall
  • Strong tidal currents and breaking waves between the training walls
  • The river mouth bar is notorious for upending large and small boats

Brunswick Heads is popular with bathers and fishermen, but the club notes both have to be wary. The safest approach is to swim between the flags during a patrolled period rather than assume any part of this stretch is calm.

Getting there

The club is on South Beach Rd, Brunswick Heads. Parking, a large park and picnic area are available at the site, and a vehicle and foot bridge across Simpsons Creek provides road access to the club.

If you want to be involved

Brunswick SLSC states it is always looking for new members to help patrol, and welcomes members from other clubs who have moved to the Brunswick Valley. For younger participants, the junior ranks (JAC) cater for ages 5 to 14, with Nippers and Seniors programs.
