Village context Brunswick Heads, a long-established fishing village at the mouth of the Brunswick River
Beach orientation The beach sweeps south-east toward Byron Bay, ending after 10.5 km at the mouth of Belongil Creek

The club sits within Brunswick Heads, a village that dates to the 1850s, when cedar cutters began felling timber and used the beach and river entrance to load logs. The river entrance is now trained by two prominent walls that define the northern end of the beach.

Facilities and access

  • Parking is available at the club.
  • A large park and picnic area sits alongside it.
  • Vehicle and foot bridge across Simpsons Creek provides easy road access to the club.

The combination of parking, open parkland and bridge access makes the club practical to reach by car and straightforward to use as a base for a beach visit.

What the club does there

Brunswick SLSC was formed in 1935 to safeguard bathers and fishermen. It patrols from the Belongil Creek mouth in the south to the surf beaches of New Brighton and South Golden Beach in the north, on weekends and public holidays from September to April.

Conditions to be aware of

The location is popular with bathers and fishermen, but the water demands caution:

  • The Brunswick river mouth bar is notorious for upending large and small boats.
  • The surf beach has a double bar system dominated by rips.
  • A prominent rip runs out against the southern training wall.
  • Strong tidal currents and breaking waves occur between the training walls.

If you are visiting the beach rather than the club grounds, treat these as the key local hazards and check conditions before entering the water.

Getting involved

New members are welcome. The club seeks members to help patrol and also welcomes members from other clubs who have moved to the Brunswick Valley. Its junior ranks, or JAC, cater for ages 5 to 14, alongside Nippers and Seniors.
