How to Solve a Rubik's Cube: A Beginner's Step-by-Step Method

Solving a 3x3 Rubik's Cube is a learnable skill, not a talent. The beginner method breaks the puzzle into seven stages: the white cross, the white corners, the middle-layer edges, the yellow cross, the yellow edges, the yellow corners, and the final corner rotation. Each stage uses at most a few short move sequences, and once you finish one stage you never undo it. Expect your first solve to take 20–40 minutes; with practice, most beginners reach 2–3 minutes within a week.

Before You Start: Cube Notation

Every guide, including this one, describes turns with letters. Learn these six symbols first — misreading them is the single most common beginner mistake.

  • R – turn the Right face clockwise, as if you were looking straight at it.
  • L – turn the Left face clockwise (looking at the left face).
  • U – turn the Up (top) face clockwise (looking down at it).
  • D – turn the Down (bottom) face clockwise (looking up at it).
  • F – turn the Front face clockwise (facing you).
  • B – turn the Back face clockwise (looking at it from behind).

An apostrophe means counterclockwise: R' is the right face turned the opposite way. A number means repeat: R2 is a half turn (same result either direction). "Clockwise" always means clockwise when that face is facing you.

Two practical tips: hold the cube with the same color on top for the whole stage you're working on, and turn only the face named — beginners often rotate the whole cube by accident, which breaks the setup.

Stage 1: The White Cross

Goal: four white edge pieces around the white center, with each edge's side color matching its center.

  1. Find the white center and hold it on top.
  2. Pick a white edge (white plus one other color, e.g., white-red). Bring it to the top layer so the white sticker faces up.
  3. Rotate the top layer until the edge's side color lines up with its matching center (white-red edge above the red center).
  4. Turn that side face twice (e.g., F2) to drop the edge into place.
  5. Repeat for all four edges.

If an edge is stuck in the middle layer, turn the face it's on once to pop it into the top layer, then start again. Don't worry about the white corners yet.

Stage 2: The White Corners

Goal: complete the white face, with the top layer's side colors matching.

Hold the cube white-side down now. Find a white corner in the bottom layer and position it directly below where it belongs. Then repeat R' D' R D until the corner slots in with white facing down. This may take 1, 3, or 5 repetitions — that's normal. If a corner is already in the top layer but twisted wrong, do R' D' R once to eject it, then reinsert it.

Stage 3: The Middle Layer

Goal: place the four middle-layer edges (no yellow on them).

  1. Find an edge in the top layer with no yellow sticker.
  2. Rotate the top layer so the edge's front color matches the front center.
  3. If the edge belongs to the right slot, apply: U R U' R' U' F' U F
  4. If it belongs to the left slot, apply: U' L' U L U F U' F'

If an edge is stuck in the middle layer in the wrong spot, use either algorithm once to knock it into the top layer, then solve it normally.

Stage 4: The Yellow Cross

Goal: a yellow cross on top (edge orientation only — corner positions don't matter yet).

Hold the cube with yellow on top. You'll see one of four patterns: a dot, an L-shape, a horizontal line, or the finished cross.

  • Dot or L-shape: position the L so it points to the top-left, then apply F R U R' U' F'. Repeat until you have a line or cross.
  • Line: hold it horizontally, apply F R U R' U' F' once to get the cross.

Stage 5: The Yellow Edges

Goal: match the yellow edges to their side centers.

Look for two adjacent top edges whose side colors already match their centers. Hold the cube so those two are at the back and right, then apply R U R' U R U2 R'. If no two edges match, apply the algorithm once from any angle, then look again.

Stage 6: The Yellow Corners (Position)

Goal: get all four yellow corners into their correct positions, even if twisted.

Find a corner that's already in the right spot. Hold it at the front-right and apply U R U' L' U R' U' L until all four corners sit in their correct positions. If none are correct, run the algorithm once and recheck.

Stage 7: The Final Corner Rotation

Goal: twist the corners so yellow faces up.

Hold the cube with yellow on top and an unsolved corner at the front-right. Repeat R' D' R D until that corner's yellow sticker faces up. Then turn only the U face to bring the next unsolved corner to the front-right and repeat. The cube may look scrambled mid-way — keep going; it resolves at the end.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Mistake Fix
Turning the wrong face Say the letter out loud before each turn
Rotating the whole cube mid-algorithm Keep the same top color for the entire stage
Skipping setup moves Always position the piece before applying an algorithm
Giving up mid-algorithm Finish the full sequence; partial turns scramble solved layers
Confusing R' with R Remember: apostrophe = opposite direction

Practice Plan

Solve once with this guide open, then solve again from memory the next day. Speed comes from repetition, not from learning more algorithms. Once you can solve consistently without notes, you can explore faster methods — but the layer-by-layer approach above is enough to solve any scramble.
