What are the latest Freeciv release updates and security fixes?

Updated

The latest stable release is Freeciv 3.2.6, published on 04th Sep 2026. According to the project news on freeciv.org, it fixes two security vulnerabilities in savegame/scenario file handling, plus other bugs. If you load savegames or scenarios from outside your own machine, or share them with other players, 3.2.6 is the version to use. Earlier 3.2.x releases also carried security fixes — 3.2.4 patched a vulnerability in the networking code.

Security-relevant releases

Two entries in the news list are explicitly security fixes rather than routine maintenance:

  • 3.2.6 — two vulnerabilities in how savegame and scenario files are handled. This is the most recent security fix and the one most likely to matter to you if you exchange game files.
  • 3.2.4 — a vulnerability in the networking code. Relevant if you play multiplayer against other people rather than only locally.

If you are on any 3.2.x version older than 3.2.6, moving to 3.2.6 picks up both fixes at once.

The older 3.1 series

The 3.1 branch is still maintained for people who have not moved to 3.2. Its last listed release is 3.1.6 (12th Dec 2025), described as a generic bugfix release, available from the Old downloads page. The 3.1 line went through 3.1.1 through 3.1.6 as bugfix releases after 3.1.0 shipped on 01st Mar 2024.

Note that the news entries for 3.1.x describe generic bugfixes; the security fixes listed above are attached to the 3.2 series.

How to check what changed in a release

The project news page lists releases in reverse chronological order, so the top entry is always the newest. For major releases the news item points to a NEWS file — for example, NEWS-3.2.0 describes what changed since 3.1.x. For bugfix releases, the entry usually just states that it is a generic bugfix release in its series, without an itemized changelog on the news page itself.

Choosing a version

  • Playing single-player with your own files: any current 3.2.x works, but 3.2.6 is the safest default.
  • Exchanging savegames or scenarios with others: use 3.2.6, since that is where the file-handling vulnerabilities are fixed.
  • Playing multiplayer over a network: 3.2.6 also includes the networking fix from 3.2.4.
  • Staying on 3.1 for compatibility: 3.1.6 is the latest listed bugfix there, available from the Old downloads page.
