How to Follow TJPDC Meetings, Events, and Public Comment

Updated

The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) publishes its meeting schedule, upcoming events, and public comment notices on tjpdc.org. Commission meetings are open to the public and held the first Thursday of each month at 7 pm at the TJPDC Office. If you want to track a specific program — housing, transportation, or environmental planning — you can also follow the individual board and committee meetings listed on the site's calendar.

Commission meetings

The TJPDC is guided by a locally appointed, twelve-member Commission, of which at least 51% are local elected officials. Member localities include the City of Charlottesville and the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.

  • When: First Thursday of each month, 7 pm
  • Where: TJPDC Office
  • Access: Open to the public

The site links to a Commission Meetings page, a Commissioners page, and a TJPDC Staff page if you need background on who is presenting or voting.

Upcoming events and committee meetings

The homepage calendar lists both Commission business and program-specific meetings. Examples shown on the site include:

Event Date / Time Location
Regional Housing Partnership September 23, 1:00–3:00 pm Jefferson-Madison Library Central Branch, Swanson Room
Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Transit Authority September 24, 5:00–7:00 pm Virtual Zoom Meeting
Commission Meeting October 1, 7:00–9:00 pm Water Street Center
MPO Tech Committee October 6, 10:00 am–12:00 pm Water Street Center

A Full Calendar link collects all scheduled events in one place, which is the fastest way to check whether a meeting has moved, gone virtual, or been added.

News, announcements, and public comment

The News & Announcements section carries project updates, meeting announcements, and public notices. Public comment and hearing notices are posted there with their comment windows. Two examples from the site:

  • Housing Preservation Grant Pre-Application Statement of Activities — from August 18, 2026 to September 3, 2026, the TJPDC receives public comment on the proposed Statement of Activities to be submitted as pre-application for FFY26 Housing Preservation Grant.
  • Draft CAPER PY25 — public comment from the Thomas Jefferson HOME Consortium.

Each notice states the comment period and links to a "read more" page with the underlying document, so you can review the material before submitting a comment.

Areas of involvement to watch

If you are following a particular topic rather than the Commission as a whole, the site groups its work into four areas, each with its own boards and programs:

  • Transportation — Metropolitan Planning Organization, Rural Transportation, RideShare, Bike and Pedestrian Planning, Regional Transit Planning, PATH
  • Community — Broadband, Legislative Services, Economic Development, Area Planning, Land Use & Env. Planning Committee, Blue Ridge Cigarette Tax Board
  • Housing — Regional Housing Partnership, Regional Housing Study, HOME Consortium, Housing Development Grant, Housing Preservation Grant
  • Environment — Chesapeake Bay (WIP) & Rivers, Solid Waste Planning, Hazard Mitigation Planning, Rivanna River Basin Commission, Septic Assistance Program, Regional Environmental Coordination, Regional Water Supply Planning, Intergovernmental Reviews

Meetings for these bodies appear on the same calendar, so subscribing to the calendar or checking it before the first Thursday of the month covers most public participation opportunities.

Practical way to stay current

  1. Open tjpdc.org and check the Upcoming Events block on the homepage.
  2. Use Full Calendar to see the complete schedule, including virtual meetings.
  3. Read News & Announcements for public comment windows and hearing notices.
  4. For a specific program, go to its area page (Transportation, Community, Housing, Environment) to find the responsible board or committee.

The site does not state that meetings are streamed or recorded, so if attendance matters to you, confirm the format — in person or Zoom — on the individual event listing before the date.
