How The Tribune's Website Is Organized

Updated

The Tribune (thetribune.ca) organizes its content into four main editorial sections—News, Opinion, Features, and Arts & Entertainment—each listing recent articles with headlines, dates, and short excerpts. If you want to find a specific type of story, start with the section that matches its format rather than searching the whole site.

The four main sections

Based on the homepage structure, the site is divided into these content categories:

Section What it covers Example items visible on the homepage
News Campus, local, and current events reporting McGill Wellness Hub reinstates GAC; McGill security badge policy; AMNAS at the Tribunal administratif du travail; how to vote in Quebec's 2026 election
Opinion Argument, commentary, and editorial positions Montreal's motion on Palestine; "Belonging is not something we have to earn"; Meta's settlement; composting; homelessness policy
Features Longer-form and personal writing "Blackface at McGill"; "Your health, your problem"; "On becoming Chinese"; "My friend AI told me"
Arts & Entertainment Arts coverage, artist profiles, and culture writing "Know Your Artist: Stina Baudin"; summer recommendations; remembering Oliver Jones

How each section is laid out

Every section follows the same pattern:

  • A lead item with a headline, a short descriptive excerpt, and a "Read More..." link
  • A dated list of additional articles beneath it
  • Dates shown in month-day-year format (for example, September 8, 2026)

This means you can scan a section's headlines and dates to judge whether a story is recent, then open the excerpt link for the full piece.

Finding a specific kind of story

Use the section that matches the story's form:

  • Breaking or reported events → News
  • Arguments and positions on issues → Opinion
  • Personal essays and deep dives → Features
  • Artist interviews, reviews, and cultural coverage → Arts & Entertainment

If you already know an author, headline, or topic, a site search or the section archive will usually be faster than browsing section by section.

What The Tribune is

The Tribune is an independent, entirely student-run newspaper at McGill University, published by the Students' Society of McGill University (SPT). It has covered McGill, Canada, and the world since 1981. Because it is student-run and independent, its editorial sections reflect student reporting and commentary rather than official university communications.
