Builder Mode vs. Editor Mode in Axiom: Which Should You Use?

Updated

Builder Mode and Editor Mode are two separate tool sets in Axiom, and the documentation frames them by complexity rather than by task. Builder Mode holds the most beginner-friendly tools, while Editor Mode offers more in-depth tools that can be combined with Tool Masks for further complexity. If you are new to Axiom, start in Builder Mode; move to Editor Mode when a build calls for finer control than the Builder tools give you.

How the two modes differ

The Axiom documentation describes the split in terms of skill level and complexity, not in terms of what you are building. Both modes serve the same overall goal — building terrain, organics, and structures faster and at higher quality — but they expose different levels of control.

Dimension Builder Mode Editor Mode
Intended user Beginners and anyone who wants quick, direct tools Builders who want deeper control
Tool complexity Most beginner-friendly tools in Axiom More in-depth tools
Extensibility Not described as combining with masks Tools can be combined with Tool Masks for further complexity
How it opens Builder Tools menu, opened with Left Alt while the 10th hotbar slot is selected Editor Mode, toggled with Right Shift

The key structural difference is the Tool Mask layer. The documentation only mentions Tool Masks in connection with Editor Mode, so treat masks as an Editor Mode concept rather than something you configure in Builder Mode.

Choosing between them

Use Builder Mode when:

  • You are new to Axiom and still learning the tool set.
  • You want to place, shape, or adjust builds without configuring extra parameters.
  • You want the fastest path from idea to blocks.

Use Editor Mode when:

  • You need tools that Builder Mode does not expose.
  • You want to combine tools with Tool Masks to narrow or redirect what a tool affects.
  • You are comfortable trading a simpler interface for more control.

These are not mutually exclusive. You can work in Builder Mode and switch to Editor Mode for a specific operation, then switch back.

Opening each mode

The documentation gives these steps for a fresh creative world:

  1. Create a new creative world. You should see a 10th hotbar slot containing an icon.
  2. If that slot is missing, run /whynoaxiom in-game and follow the instructions it provides. If the problem continues, ask in the official Axiom Discord.
  3. To open the Builder Tools menu, select the 10th hotbar slot, hold Left Alt, and use the scroll wheel to navigate the options.
  4. To open the Context Menu, hold Left Alt with a hotbar slot from 0 to 9 selected.
  5. To open or close Editor Mode, press Right Shift.

All of these keybinds can be changed in Minecraft's Controls Menu, so if Left Alt or Right Shift conflicts with something else in your setup, rebind them there rather than working around them.

Common snags

  • No 10th slot icon. This is the documented failure case, and /whynoaxiom is the intended first response. The documentation points to the official Discord only if that does not resolve it.
  • Wrong hotbar slot. The Builder Tools menu and the Context Menu use different slot selections — slot 10 for Builder Tools, slots 0–9 for the Context Menu. Holding Left Alt on the wrong slot opens the wrong menu.
  • Expecting masks in Builder Mode. Tool Masks are described only alongside Editor Mode, so if you are looking for mask options, you are likely in the wrong mode.
