Can Non-Members Attend Dallas Downriver Club Events?
Updated
Most Dallas Downriver Club (DDRC) trips are for members only, but two kinds of events are open to non-members: the local "Urban Paddles" and the yearly "Caddoween" event at Caddo Lake. If you are new to the club and want to meet current members before joining, an Urban Paddle is the intended entry point.
What Is Open to Non-Members
The club's About page states that trips (events) are for members only except for local Urban Paddles and the yearly Caddoween event at Caddo Lake.
Urban Paddles
- Usually held on Saturday or Sunday mornings at a local river or lake.
- Last only 3–4 hours.
- Described as a good opportunity to meet current members and new member prospects.
This makes them the lowest-commitment way to try the club: a short, local paddle where beginners and experienced paddlers alike are welcome.
Caddoween at Caddo Lake
The club's annual Caddoween event is the other exception open beyond the membership. The page does not give dates, location details beyond Caddo Lake, or any fee information, so check the Events page for the current year's specifics.
What Requires Membership
Everything else on the club calendar is members-only, including:
- Weekend or multi-day base camping and river camping trips
- Fishing expeditions
- Summertime Moonlight Floats
- River Cleanups
- Occasional expedition trips farther afield (the Boundary Waters, Big Bend, New Mexico, Colorado, and other locations)
The club currently hosts about 12 to 15 paddling events a year, so most of that calendar is closed to non-members.
Practical Points Before You Attend
- Bring your own gear. Each member is responsible for supplying their own watercraft and camping gear; the page does not mention loaner boats, so plan on having your own kayak or canoe for an Urban Paddle.
- Check the calendar first. Urban Paddles are "usually" on weekend mornings rather than on a fixed schedule, so confirm the next date on the Events page before showing up.
- Expect a range of skill levels. The club explicitly welcomes beginners and experts, singles and families, and both whitewater and flat-water paddlers.
Choosing Your First Step
| If you want to… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Try the club with minimal time commitment | Attend an Urban Paddle (3–4 hours, local) |
| Combine paddling with a club tradition | Watch for the yearly Caddoween event at Caddo Lake |
| Join overnight or multi-day trips | Become a member first |
If your goal is overnight camping, fishing trips, or the longer expeditions, membership is the gate. Start with an Urban Paddle to meet members, then use the Join us page when you are ready.
