Does Removing Metadata with ExifRemove Change How My Photo Looks?
Updated
Usually no — by default ExifRemove copies the compressed JPEG image data without re-encoding, so the visible picture stays the same. The exceptions are rotation and color: if you enable "Keep photos the right way up," photos that carry EXIF rotation or mirroring are re-saved at high JPEG quality, which can slightly change quality and file size, and removing a color profile can shift how colors appear. Cleaning metadata also does not make a photo anonymous.
What stays the same by default
ExifRemove strips metadata — EXIF (including embedded GPS and camera details), XMP, IPTC, comments, embedded thumbnails, color profiles, and other application metadata — plus any data after the JPEG end marker. Essential JPEG image and color-decoding information stays intact.
In the normal case, the compressed image data is copied without re-encoding. That means the pixels you see are the same pixels that were in the original file; only the surrounding metadata is removed.
When the picture can change
Two situations can affect the result:
- Rotation handling. With "Keep photos the right way up" enabled, photos that need rotation are re-saved at high quality. This preserves orientation but can slightly change quality and file size.
- Color profiles. Removing a color profile can affect colors. Check the cleaned preview before you download.
If you turn that rotation option off, rotation metadata is removed without rotating the pixels — so some photos may appear sideways or mirrored.
Does it make my photo anonymous?
No. Removing metadata reduces what a file reveals about where and how it was taken, but it does not make a photo anonymous. The image content itself — faces, landmarks, license plates, reflections, distinctive objects — can still identify people or places. Treat metadata removal as one privacy step, not a guarantee of anonymity.
How to check the result yourself
- Drop in your JPEGs (JPG/JPEG, up to 25 MB each, 50 photos / 200 MB per batch).
- Leave "Keep photos the right way up" on if your photos rely on EXIF rotation; turn it off if you want no re-encoding at all.
- Review the cleaned preview, especially colors and orientation.
- Download individual cleaned copies or the whole batch as a ZIP. Your originals stay unchanged, so download before closing the tab.
