Does SpoolScout Show Real Prices and Where Can I Buy the Filaments?

Updated

SpoolScout shows a price-per-kilogram field and an affiliate purchase link (typically "Buy on Amazon") for each filament listing, but it is a comparison and discovery tool, not a store — you complete the purchase on the retailer's site. Treat the listed price as a reference point rather than a live quote: many listings in the current data show the price as "Unavailable," and the site states it earns commissions on purchases made through its links.

What SpoolScout actually displays

Each filament row in the comparison table combines product data with a purchase path:

Field What it shows
Product Brand, material, and color (e.g., Overture PLA Plus Black)
Price/kg Price normalized to one kilogram
Price Listed price for that specific spool size
Weight (kg) Spool weight, such as 1 kg, 2 kg, or 6 kg
Diameter (mm) Filament diameter
Density (g/cm³) Material density
MFI (g/10min) Melt flow index
Bending modulus (MPa) Stiffness indicator
Bending strength (MPa) Load at failure in bending
Impact strength (kJ/m²) Toughness indicator
Print info (°C) Recommended print temperature range
Affiliate link "Buy on Amazon" button

The same material appears as multiple rows when it comes in different spool sizes or colors — for example, Overture PLA Plus Black is listed separately at 1 kg and 2 kg, and Overture PLA Black appears at 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg, and 6 kg. That matters for price comparison: the price/kg column is the only figure that lets you compare a 1 kg spool against a 6 kg spool fairly.

Are the prices real-time?

Not reliably. In the current listing data, the price field for the Overture entries reads "Unavailable" while the price/kg field is also blank. This tells you two things:

  • The site pulls price data from an external source, and that source can return nothing for a given product.
  • A blank or "Unavailable" price does not mean the filament is discontinued or out of stock — it means SpoolScout could not populate that field at that moment.

Because of this, always confirm the current price on the retailer page before deciding. The affiliate link is the authoritative destination; the comparison table is the shortlist.

How to buy through SpoolScout

  1. Open the Browse/Compare table and filter by type, manufacturer, color, or a property such as print temperature.
  2. Narrow to the spool size you want — check the Weight (kg) column, since the same color is often sold in several sizes.
  3. Compare the price/kg column across candidates rather than the raw price, so different spool sizes are comparable.
  4. Click the affiliate link ("Buy on Amazon") on the row you chose.
  5. Verify the live price, availability, and shipping on the retailer page before checkout.

The purchase, payment, and delivery all happen on the retailer's site. SpoolScout does not process transactions.

What the commission model means for you

SpoolScout discloses that it receives commissions for purchases made through links on the site. Practically, this means:

  • The purchase link is monetized, so the site has an incentive to send you to a partner retailer.
  • It does not change the price you pay — affiliate commissions are paid by the retailer out of its margin, not added to your cart.
  • It does mean the retailer list may be narrower than "everywhere you could buy this filament." If a brand you want isn't linked, check the manufacturer or other retailers directly.

Practical checklist before you buy

  • Confirm the price on the retailer page; ignore "Unavailable" entries in the table.
  • Compare price/kg, not price, when spool sizes differ.
  • Check the print temperature range against your printer's capabilities.
  • Use the mechanical properties (bending modulus, bending strength, impact strength) to shortlist, then read the manufacturer's datasheet for the final call.
  • Remember the link is an affiliate link, so cross-check one alternative retailer if price matters to you.
