Does Wings 3D Support Animation and What Features Does It Offer?

Updated

Wings 3D does not support animation. According to the official Wings 3D site, "There is no support in Wings for animation." It is a polygon and subdivision modeler, so its feature set is built around modeling, materials, lighting, and UV mapping rather than motion or rigging.

What Wings 3D Is

Wings 3D is described on its homepage as "an advanced subdivision modeler that is both powerful and easy to use." It was originally inspired by Nendo and Mirai from Izware, and development began in 2001.

The name comes from the Winged Edge Data Structure (WEDS) — the data structure Wings 3D uses to store adjacency relationships between edges, faces, and vertices in a model.

Features Listed by Wings 3D

The official site lists the following capabilities:

  • A wide range of modeling tools
  • A customizable interface
  • Support for lights and materials
  • A built-in AutoUV mapping facility

It is also written in Erlang, an open source functional programming language distributed by Ericsson.

What Wings 3D Does Not Do

  • Animation: The site states plainly that there is no animation support.
  • Rigging or motion work: Not mentioned as a feature, and the animation statement rules it out as a purpose.

If your project needs animation, Wings 3D is not the tool for that stage. It can still serve as a modeling step if you export your model to software that handles animation.

Licensing and Cost

Wings 3D is open source and, per the site, "completely free for use in both personal and commercial projects." That means you can use it in commercial work without a licensing fee.

Who Maintains It

  • Started in 2001 by Björn Gustavsson (bjorng) and Dan Gudmundsson (dgud).
  • Maintained and extended by Richard Jones (optigon) between 2006 and 2012, who coded many new features.
  • Currently maintained by Dan with help from the community.

Choosing It or Not

Choose Wings 3D if you need a free, open source subdivision modeler for personal or commercial modeling work, and you value a customizable interface plus built-in AutoUV mapping. Look elsewhere — or plan a separate animation tool — if animation is part of your pipeline, since Wings 3D explicitly does not provide it.
