How Astra Organizes a Local Music Library
Updated
Astra organizes a local library by pointing it at your folders and letting the player handle metadata, artwork, and listening history from there. It is built for people who keep their own files — FLACs, MP3s, and carefully tagged collections — rather than streaming from a catalog. If your music lives in folders on disk, Astra reads that structure and turns it into a browsable library.
Point Astra at your folders
The library starts with your own directory structure. You give Astra the folders that hold your music, and it takes over from that point: metadata, artwork, and history are all handled from there. This means the folder layout you already maintain becomes the input, not something you have to rebuild inside the app.
Six ways to browse
Once the library is indexed, Astra offers six browsing paths:
| Browse mode | What it groups by |
|---|---|
| Artists | Performer |
| Albums | Release |
| Tracks | Individual songs |
| Genres | Style tag |
| Years | Release or tag year |
| Folders | Your on-disk structure |
The folder view matters if your tagging is inconsistent — you can always fall back to the way you actually filed the files.
Album handling details
Astra treats releases with some care rather than flattening everything into one list:
- Album counts are shown, so you can see how many releases sit under an artist or view.
- A singles section separates standalone tracks from full albums.
- Multi-disc releases are handled properly, so a two-disc album stays one album instead of splitting into two.
Ratings with half-star steps
Ratings run from one to five stars in half-star increments. That gives you ten distinct rating levels instead of five, which is useful if you want finer sorting within a large collection. The half-star step is the notable part — many players only offer whole stars.
What this means in practice
If you have a tagged library and a folder structure you trust, Astra's approach is low-friction: point it at the folders, and browsing, album grouping, and ratings follow. The main dependency is that your files carry usable metadata — artwork and history are handled by the player, but accurate artist, album, genre, and year grouping depends on what is in your tags. Where tags are weak, the folder view is the reliable fallback.
Astra is open source under GPL-3.0, and a download and source code link are available from the project site.
