How Avrae Integrates With Character Sheets
Updated
Avrae reads your character sheet from D&D Beyond, Dicecloud, or a Google Sheet, then automatically generates macros for attacks, ability checks, and saving throws. Once a sheet is connected, you run a command for the check, save, attack, or spell you want, and Avrae resolves every roll involved without you entering the numbers by hand. This works for any D&D game you play over Discord where your sheet lives in one of those three sources.
Supported Sheet Sources
Avrae pulls character data from three places:
- D&D Beyond — the official digital toolset for 5e content.
- Dicecloud — a third-party character sheet service.
- Google Sheets — a sheet you maintain yourself in a specific format Avrae can read.
The source you pick determines where you make edits. If you update your character on D&D Beyond, Avrae sees the change on the next sync rather than you re-entering anything into Discord.
What Avrae Generates From Your Sheet
After reading the sheet, Avrae builds macros for the rolls your character actually makes:
| Sheet data | What Avrae produces |
|---|---|
| Attacks | Macros that roll to hit and roll damage |
| Ability checks | Macros tied to your ability modifiers and proficiencies |
| Saving throws | Macros using your save bonuses |
| Spells | Cast commands that resolve the required rolls |
Because these macros come from the sheet, the modifiers reflect your current character rather than a value you typed once and forgot to update.
How a Roll Resolves
- Your sheet is connected to Avrae.
- You issue a command for the action — a check, save, attack, or cast.
- Avrae looks up the relevant modifier or attack entry on the sheet.
- It rolls the dice and applies the modifier automatically.
- The result posts in the Discord channel.
The practical effect: instead of rolling a d20 and adding your bonus yourself, you name the action and Avrae returns the finished number. Advantage, disadvantage, and crits are handled by the dice engine, so those cases resolve inside the same command.
Why This Matters at the Table
Manual rolling slows a text channel down — someone rolls, waits, adds a modifier, and posts again. Sheet integration collapses that into one step, and it keeps the math consistent because the modifier comes from the sheet rather than from memory. It also feeds the initiative tracker, which supports automatic combatant sorting along with HP, AC, resistance, and status effect tracking, so combat state and character state stay connected.
Connecting Avrae to Your Server
Before any of this works, Avrae has to be in your server. Invite it through the link on avrae.io, select your server from the dropdown, and enable these permissions:
- Read Messages
- Send Messages
- Embed Links
- Manage Messages
If rolls don't post or commands seem to do nothing, missing permissions are the first thing to check — particularly Send Messages and Embed Links, since results are delivered as embedded messages.
Common Snags
- Sheet not linked. Macros only exist after the sheet source is connected; a fresh Avrae with no sheet has nothing to roll from.
- Stale data. If you edit the sheet, expect Avrae to reflect it on the next sync, not instantly mid-command.
- Wrong source format. A Google Sheet has to match what Avrae expects to read; an arbitrary spreadsheet won't parse.
- Permission gaps. Manage Messages matters for the bot's channel behavior, so don't skip it during setup.
The short version: connect one of the three supported sheets, let Avrae generate the macros, and then run commands instead of doing arithmetic. The setup cost is a one-time invite and link; the payoff is every subsequent roll resolving in a single step.
