How Data Syncing and Import/Export Work in Blindtrainer
Updated
Blindtrainer's data tools are built around a single identifier: your Your ID. You enter an ID, click Update my ID, and your training stats — streak, total cases trained, time spent training, and most cases trained in one day — are tied to that ID. Sync Data pulls that record back down, while Import and Export move the same data in and out of the site manually. If you train on more than one device or browser, setting the same ID on each one is what keeps your numbers consistent.
What each control does
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Your ID field | Holds the identifier your stats are stored under | Set it once per device/browser |
| Update my ID | Applies the ID you typed so the site loads/saves under it | After typing a new or existing ID |
| Sync Data | Fetches your stored stats for the current ID | When you switch devices or your numbers look stale |
| Export | Produces a copy of your training data you can keep | Before a reset, or as a backup |
| Import | Loads previously exported data back in | Restoring a backup or moving to a new device |
The stats these controls cover are the ones shown on the page: Streak, Total cases trained, Time spent training, and Most cases trained in 1 day.
Setting up an ID so sync works
- Type an identifier into the Your ID field. It can be anything you'll remember — the site doesn't require a specific format.
- Click Update my ID. This binds the current browser to that ID.
- Repeat on every other device or browser you train on, using the same ID.
- Click Sync Data on each device to pull the latest numbers.
The key point: sync follows the ID, not the device. If two devices use different IDs, they will never see each other's stats.
Backing up and moving your data
Because the page exposes both Export and Import, the safe routine is:
- Before any destructive action (see the reset options below), click Export and save the file somewhere you control.
- To restore or migrate, open Blindtrainer on the target device, set the correct ID, then use Import to load the exported data.
- After importing, click Sync Data so the displayed stats match what you just loaded.
This is the practical answer to "how do I move my training history to a new computer" — export on the old one, import on the new one, and keep the same ID on both.
Resets: know what you're clearing
The page includes three separate reset controls, and they are not the same thing:
- Reset — clears the current training state.
- Slow Cases — clears the record of cases you've been slow on (the ones flagged for extra drilling).
- Hard Reset — the broad wipe.
Export first if any of those numbers matter to you. A Hard Reset is the one most likely to cost you history you can't reconstruct.
Common snags
- Stats look wrong after switching devices. You probably typed a different ID. Re-enter the original ID and click Update my ID, then Sync Data.
- You imported but nothing changed. Confirm the ID is set correctly before importing, then sync.
- You reset without exporting. There's no described undo for a Hard Reset — the export/import pair is the backup mechanism, so use it proactively.
What the page does not specify
The site text doesn't state where the data is stored, how long it's retained, whether an ID is private or guessable, or whether sync happens automatically. Treat Sync Data as the explicit refresh action and Export as your own copy, rather than assuming background syncing. The donation section notes that support keeps the site "100% free" and funds maintenance and updates, but it says nothing about data retention or account recovery — so don't rely on the site as your only backup.
