How do I report a bug on Gentoo's Bugzilla?

Updated

To report a bug on Gentoo's Bugzilla, go to bugs.gentoo.org, read the Gentoo Bug Reporting Guide first, then create or log into an account and use File a Bug (or New) to submit your report. Two rules apply before you start: do not include any AI-generated work in your report, per Gentoo's AI policy, and if you plan to run a spider, bot, or other automated process against the Bugzilla, read the Bot Policy first.

Before you file

The Bugzilla main page states plainly: "Before reporting bugs, please ensure that you read the Gentoo Bug Reporting Guide." That guide is the authoritative source for what a good report contains, so treat the steps below as the workflow around it, not a replacement for it.

Also check that the bug isn't already known. The main page offers quick queries you can use before writing anything:

  • Bugs reported in the last 24 hours | last 7 days
  • Bugs changed in the last 24 hours | last 7 days
  • View bugs reported in the last 24 hours | last 12 hours

If your issue appears in those lists, add your details to the existing report instead of opening a duplicate.

Steps to submit a report

  1. Read the Gentoo Bug Reporting Guide. Linked from the Bugzilla main page. It defines what Gentoo expects in a report.
  2. Create an account or log in. The main page provides New Account, Log In, and Forgot Password options. An account is required to file and to follow your bug.
  3. Open the filing form. Use File a Bug on the main page, or New in the navigation bar.
  4. Describe the problem so it can be reproduced. State what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead. Include the exact versions of the affected packages and your system profile, plus the commands you ran and their output. Attach logs and build output rather than pasting fragments out of context.
  5. Submit and watch the report. After filing, you can track changes through the same account. Respond to developer questions with the requested data.

What not to include

Per Gentoo's AI policy, as stated on the Bugzilla main page: do not include any work from AI in your bug reports. Keep the content of your report your own.

If you intend to query Bugzilla programmatically — a spider, bot, or other automated process — read the Bot Policy before doing so.

Common pitfalls

  • Filing without reading the guide. The main page asks you to read it first; reports that skip it often miss required information and get sent back.
  • Skipping the duplicate check. The 24-hour and 7-day queries exist so you can find recent reports quickly.
  • Vague reproduction steps. Developers need enough detail to reproduce the issue themselves; "it doesn't work" is not actionable.
  • Pasting AI-generated text. This is explicitly prohibited by Gentoo's AI policy.
