How does Are.na work?

Updated

Are.na is online software for saving and organizing content that matters to you, built around four steps: Capture, Arrange, Search, and Connect. You save photos, notes, files, and webpages; your content lives in channels (editable, arrangeable, searchable containers); everything is findable across your own channels, your network, and all of Are.na; and you can reuse existing content in your own collections to build new contexts over time. It suits students, designers, academics, collectors, and researchers — anyone assembling ideas rather than consuming a feed.

The four core mechanics

Capture

Save photos, notes, files, webpages, and "anything else you can think of." There is no restriction to a single content type — a channel can hold mixed media.

Arrange

Your content lives in channels — containers that are editable, arrangeable, and searchable. A channel is the basic unit of organization, and you decide what goes in it and how it is ordered.

Search

Everything on Are.na is findable. Search works across three scopes:

  • your own channels
  • your network
  • all of Are.na

Connect

You can reuse existing content in your own collections, building new contexts over time. This is what makes channels cumulative rather than disposable — a block saved once can be pulled into a different channel later.

What makes it different from an algorithmic feed

Are.na states plainly: no ads, no personalized recommendations. There is nothing algorithmic steering you in a particular direction. The content you are exposed to is based only on a network you have intentionally cultivated yourself. The stated result is "a kind of texture of a network that is both difficult to replicate and rewarding to traverse."

If you are used to platforms that surface content for you, the practical consequence is that discovery is your responsibility — you find new people through content, and new ideas through people.

How the platform is sustained

Are.na is independent and sustained entirely by its members. The site states its only business is making Are.na worth paying for, and that the people who use it are its only customers. It reports 20,516 people supporting Are.na through Premium subscriptions. The company is built by a small team: four full-time on product, engineering, editorial, and operations, plus one part-time developer on the iOS app.

Building on top of Are.na

Are.na offers a completely open API for building your own applications using its data and functionality, alongside SDK, MCP, and other resources. The site's framing is "there's no wrong way to use Are.na" — the API exists to support uses beyond the official interface.

Getting started

  1. Sign up on are.na, or download the app (an iOS app is in active development by a part-time team member).
  2. Create a channel for a topic you are actually collecting around.
  3. Capture your first blocks — a photo, a note, a file, a webpage.
  4. Search across your channels to see how items relate.
  5. Connect by reusing a block from one channel inside another, building a new context.

A note on the "secret"

Are.na's own advice: allow yourself to go down rabbit holes. In their framing, a rabbit hole is not a distraction — it is your brain telling you to pay attention to something. This is consistent with the platform's design: no algorithm decides what you see next, so following a thread is the intended mode of use.
