How Does TechanJS Relate to D3?
Updated
TechanJS is a financial charting and technical analysis library built on top of D3. It uses D3 as its underlying visualization engine, then adds domain-specific abstractions for stock charts — candlesticks, OHLC bars, volume, and technical indicators — so you don't have to assemble those from raw D3 primitives yourself. This matters most if you already work with D3 or need custom, interactive financial charts rather than a fixed out-of-the-box widget.
The division of labor
The relationship is layered rather than competitive:
| Layer | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| D3 | Low-level visualization: scales, axes, SVG rendering, data binding, transitions |
| TechanJS | Financial domain logic: candlestick and OHLC plotting, volume, indicator computation and rendering |
D3 gives you general-purpose building blocks for any data visualization. TechanJS takes those blocks and packages them into chart types and indicators that are specific to financial markets. You are not replacing D3 — you are working through TechanJS, which in turn drives D3.
What TechanJS adds on top
According to the project's own description, TechanJS provides a visual stock charting and technical analysis library with these chart and indicator capabilities:
- Chart types: Candlestick, OHLC, Volume
- Indicators: Moving Average (Simple & Exponential), Ichimoku Cloud, RSI, MACD
- Trade annotations: Trades
- A complete example combining these
Each of these would otherwise require you to compute the indicator values and hand-build the rendering logic in D3. TechanJS supplies that layer so you can focus on configuration and data rather than reimplementing standard financial charting.
What it means for D3 developers
Because TechanJS sits on D3, the practical implications are:
- Customizability carries over. You keep access to D3's rendering model, so styling, scales, and interactions remain adaptable rather than locked behind an opaque component.
- You still think in D3 terms. Knowledge of D3's data-driven approach transfers directly; TechanJS is an extension of that mental model, not a separate paradigm.
- You trade some control for speed. Using TechanJS's abstractions is faster than building candlesticks and MACD from scratch, but it also means conforming to how the library structures those charts.
When this relationship is an advantage
The D3 foundation is most useful when you need interactive financial charts that run in modern and mobile browsers and you want to tailor the result. If your requirement is a standard, fully pre-built chart with no customization, the D3 dependency is less of a benefit. If your requirement is a bespoke financial visualization where you control the rendering details, building on D3 through TechanJS gives you both the financial primitives and the flexibility underneath them.
To see the abstractions in practice, the project points to its documentation, source, and examples, including a complete example that combines chart types and indicators.
