How IFWiki Is Organized, and Where to Find Games, Software, and Events

Updated

IFWiki is an encyclopedia of interactive fiction covering its history, theory, craft, tools, and people. Its navigation menu groups content into five main areas — Games, Events, Software, Architecture, and Other categories — and each area follows the same pattern: a search page, a browse page, and an "Add" page for contributing new entries. To find something, start from the matching section in the navigation menu rather than a single global search box.

Games

The Games section is the place to look for individual works of interactive fiction.

  • Search games — look up a specific title.
  • Browse games — move through the collection by category.
  • Add game — create a page for a game that isn't listed yet.
  • All games and Cover art gallery — see the full list or browse visually.

Game pages are also where editing projects happen. For example, IFWiki has run an effort to add source code URLs to game pages, and in late 2025 it asked contributors to add games to the new "War" and "Wordplay" literary genres using "Actions → Edit with form" on existing pages.

Events

The Events section covers the community's calendar and news.

  • Event news — results and deadlines for competitions and jams.
  • Browse events and Add event — find or list events.
  • Competitions, Jams, Conferences, Meetings, Other events — subcategories by type.

The Calendar (with a full-page view and an "Add an event" link) is the quickest way to see what's coming up. As of the Main Page snapshot dated October 13, 2026, event news included:

Event Status shown
InkJam 2026 Results announced 1 September 2026
IntroComp 2026 Results announced 12 September 2026; first place The Veil
IFComp 2026 Voting ends 19 October 2026
ECTOCOMP 2026 Submissions due 31 October 2026
Bare-Bones Jam 2026 Submissions due 31 October 2026
Interactive Fiction Showcase 2026 Submissions due 31 December 2026

Recurring meetings listed include ClubFloyd (weekly), jams hosted by the Neo-Interactives (monthly), and monthly meetings of the People's Republic of Interactive Fiction, the Seattle IF Group, and the SF Bay Area Interactive Fiction Group.

Software

The Software section is for the tools used to play and build interactive fiction.

  • Search software and Browse software — find a program.
  • Add software — list a new tool.
  • Interpreters — programs that run IF games.
  • Authoring systems — tools for writing IF.
  • Utilities and Libraries — supporting software.

Architecture

The Architecture section documents the technical structures behind IF systems. It has its own Browse architecture and Add architecture pages, and it is listed separately from Software in the navigation menu.

Other categories

This section collects reference material that doesn't fit the areas above, including:

  • Accessibility — resources for accessible interactive fiction.
  • Basics — introductory material.
  • Glossary — terminology used across the wiki.
  • People — pages about individuals in the IF community.

Practical notes before you log in

The Main Page carries a security notice: the wiki server was recently hacked. IFWiki states it believes password hashes were not compromised, but asks users to reset their password at Special:PasswordReset before logging in. Details are on the page "IFWiki:September 2026 security incident."

Account-related links (Create account, Log in) and personal tools appear in the site header, and a Dark mode option is available in the navigation menu. General wiki tools — What links here, Related changes, Special pages, Printable version, Permanent link, and Cargo data — sit in the sidebar of each page.
