How Swim England West Midlands Differs from Swim England
Updated
Swim England West Midlands is a regional arm of Swim England, not a separate governing body. Swim England is the national governing body for swimming, diving, artistic swimming and water polo in England; its national development work is divided into regions, and each region has its own Regional Management Board (RMB) that makes decisions for that area and employs staff to carry out the regional strategy. The West Midlands region works in partnership with Swim England rather than replacing it.
The two layers at a glance
| Swim England | Swim England West Midlands | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | National governing body for aquatics in England | One of Swim England's eight regions |
| Decision-making | Sets national direction and development strategy | Regional Management Board decides regional matters |
| Staffing | National development directorate | RMB employs staff to deliver the strategy locally |
| Relationship | Parent body | Works in partnership with Swim England |
What the region actually covers
The West Midlands region is made up of the clubs and associations within four affiliated county organisations:
- Shropshire ASA
- Warwickshire ASA
- Staffordshire ASA
- Worcester County ASA
So when you see results or news attributed to a West Midlands county — for example, Worcestershire finishing 16th in Division 1 at the Swim England Inter County Championships 2026, or Warwickshire finishing 13th overall — those counties sit inside this regional structure.
Why the distinction matters in practice
The split explains where different things live:
- National level: the overall governing-body role for the sport, including the national development directorate that the regions sit under.
- Regional level: the RMB's decisions about the region, the staff who deliver them, and region-specific activity such as the Regional Development Programme (RDP) selections, regional coach and technical panel structures, officiating courses and workshops, and regional records and hall of fame.
- County and club level: the four county associations and their clubs, which is where most swimmers, teachers and volunteers actually interact with the system.
If you are looking for a club, the region's site points you to its Find a Club tool for aquatics clubs in the West Midlands. If you are looking for upcoming competitions, events are listed on the region's Calendar page. For information on each discipline, governance, safeguarding and clubs, the site's floating navigation menu is the intended route.
A quick way to decide where to look
- Question about national policy, the governing body's role, or the sport England-wide → Swim England.
- Question about West Midlands competitions, regional selection, regional workforce courses, or which county you belong to → Swim England West Midlands.
- Question about joining a local club or county-level activity → start with the region's Find a Club and county associations.
The practical takeaway: treat the West Midlands region as the local delivery and decision layer of Swim England, with its own board and staff, covering Shropshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
