How the Memorize Earth Game Board Works

Updated

Memorize Earth is a Jeopardy-style geography trainer played on a 30-tile board. You pick a tile (or press Space/Enter to take the next question in order), answer the clue, and clear tiles to build a score. The board tracks your cleared count as 0/30, and the game is explicitly designed to be very hard at the start — progress is saved in your browser over time rather than expected in one session.

Starting a Board

The board is the home screen. Each tile holds a question in a category such as countries, capitals, U.S. states, Canadian provinces, flags, oceans, or mountain ranges. A few things to know before your first pick:

  • Tile selection: Click any tile, or press Space / Enter to take the next one in order.
  • Score display: The header shows your score (starting at $0) and cleared count (starting at 0/30).
  • New Board: Generates a fresh set of tiles. Category filter changes only apply on your next New Board, not the current one.
  • Settings: Open via the ⚙ button. Changes save as you make them.

Answering a Question

When you take a tile, the question view opens with the clue and a set of controls:

Control What it does
Skip Move past the current question
Reveal Answer Show the correct answer
Next Question Advance to the following question
Back to Board Return to the tile grid

The question view also shows a question counter (e.g., Question 1/60), your score, a timer, round number, current streak, and best streak. Answering correctly adds to your score and clears the tile; the board's Cleared counter updates as you go.

Modes and Board Variants

The mode selector changes how the board behaves:

  • Standard Board — the default mixed-category board.
  • New Stuff Only — surfaces questions you haven't seen yet.
  • Type Only — answer by typing rather than selecting.
  • Globe Mode — location-based questions.
  • Presidents Mode — U.S. presidents.
  • Drill Weak Spots — focuses on categories where your mastery is low.
  • Flag Drill — flags only. The game's own warning screen suggests starting here if the standard board feels brutal.
  • God Mode — the hardest variant.

Mastery, History, and Progress

The game tracks per-question history so old questions resurface over time. Two reset actions exist in Settings, and they do different things:

  • Reset Question History — clears which questions you've seen so the board can re-surface old ones. Your memory and category stats stay.
  • Forget Everything — wipes all progress: mastery, settings, everything.

Category filters show numbers in the form mastered · learning · unseen / total, so you can see where you stand before generating a new board. There's also a Cloud Sync option and a Disconnect Cloud Sync action in Settings.

Practical Tips for a First Session

  • Expect a low score early. The game states outright that a perfect score won't happen "for a WHILE" and that progress accumulates across sessions in the same browser.
  • If the standard board is discouraging, switch to Flag Drill first — it's the game's own recommended entry point.
  • Use Reveal Answer freely while learning; the spaced-repetition history is what drives long-term retention, not any single run.
  • Check the category mastery numbers before hitting New Board so you're not re-drilling categories you've already mastered.

Common Sticking Points

  • Category changes not applying: They take effect on the next New Board, not the current one.
  • Progress seems lost: Confirm you're in the same browser — progress is stored locally unless Cloud Sync is connected.
  • Accidentally wiping stats: "Forget Everything" is irreversible and clears mastery and settings, not just history. Use "Reset Question History" if you only want old questions to reappear.
